Default RS Conundrum

I’m thinking there are other folks here with a similar situation. I bought my GT3RS new back in 2011, went looking for a GT3 at the time, ended up with an Aqua Blue / White Gold RS, pure dumb luck. Through the years, I’ve driven the car as if it’s a $150K car, 10K miles total (lots of cars means I don’t get to pile miles on to any of them), but recently an Aqua Blue car was listed at GRP for $750K and sold in a week.

I’m at a point in my life where I’m not investing more money into cars, I have to manage my collection with the value I have, cars fund cars. So now I’m looking at the opportunity cost of holding onto one of the most perfect Porsche’s ever made, or exploring other stuff. Assuming ~$700K, I can purchase a perfect 996/997GT3 for $150-$200K and have a bunch left over to go exploring. And those cars can be driven without regard.

I know this RS will continue to increase, given the rarity, this is a million dollar car in say 5 years? But I never wanted to own a million dollar car. I don’t want to eat the insurance, I don’t want to second guess putting on mileage and my biggest fear is some knucklehead plows into it while I’m out having a nice little drive. Do I throw away owning a great car, purchased new, a car I will never get back?

I can’t be the only one here with this question so how are y’all dealing with this, what are the answers you are telling yourself?

If you’d rather have the money than the car, it’s time to sell. If the car is truly special, no number will feel right.

It’s not about having the $$, it’s about funding other cars. Will that be a better driving experience…

I think you have your answer.
Sell the RS for the strong value and reposition the capital into other cars you can enjoy.

Best of luck with your moves.

BAT is lots of make believe and shill bids. There is an awful lot of bull **** going on. Your car is worth a tonne of money no doubt but there is a lot of fake froth in the ‘system’ with dealer to dealer transactions in a market controlled by a handful
of buyers.

The fact you could sell an RS and buy 3 cars such as there for the money is insane. Sell high, buy low!

997 GT3 - $170k/$200k ish
Ferrari 458/488 - $200k / $220k
Lambo Huracan $200k ish

Or you could buy an Aventador! I think if you see / hear an Aventador, it looks like a million dollar car - they look like good value in comparison to the RS! Strange one

I share similar concerns with OP, but I would never sell my RS to cash out unless I absolutely had to. All the newer and more "modern" cars are mostly a turn-off for me.

I don’t think any of us want a new Ferrari but the equation is, sell the RS and pick up a 997 GT3 and have money left over to also buy a 458, E30 M3 and a 964 RS…!! Maybe not quite all of the cars above but not far off

The only thing that would give me pause is that you're the original owner of the car as that's pretty cool. Otherwise, if you're not really driving it then I agree I'd sell it and replace it with multiple special cars like G80 suggested.

I too have little interest in driving something worth $750k on public roads.

Good point, I didn't think about that. I special ordered mine after begging for an allocation (no dealer markup). Had no history with Porsche.

Never sell a 997GT3RS for any another car always add never substitute.
Exceptions would be financial hardship, health, kids school, etc.

Yeah, that’s the thought process, all except for buying a Ferrari, not interested in an Italian. Regular GT3, 964RS is supposed to be special but I kind of prefer the water cooled stuff, maybe a touring, a tuned Carrera T or a Dakar is kind of interesting. Lots of possiblities.

Most important question is: What other cars are in your current lineup?

As someone who recently sold their .2 RS (and regrets it) but also has many other fun cars, my advice would be to keep it. It seems you already use it sparingly so up the declared value, find some sort of diminished value policy and add another complimentary car to the lineup (if you don't already have). When I wanted to sell my RS I said "it feels too precious to use all the time" and many said "it's not for all the time". I didn't listen. So I sold it and bought a GT3 to "use all the time" but I already have fun cars for that purpose so i am left searching for another RS or being happy without one.

On the other hand, life IS fine without an RS too. Sell it for 650k and do something with the cash. But if you think you will miss it, you will.

I have a little bit of everything. I’m not afraid to drive the RS, just have lots to rotate through.

1988 951 Turbo S (Silver Rose)
1988 911 Carrera Targa (Lagoon over Green/Grey)
1992 MB 500e (Porsche Engineered and Built)
1996 911 Carrera, Aerokit 1
2011 GT3 RS (Aqua / White Gold)
2014 991 50Th Anniversary (Slick top Manual)
2025 718 Spyder RS (Weissach / Vandium Grey)

Keep the RS til you can no longer drive, and enjoy it knowing that you didn’t pay $700k for it.

I would sell. There are better cars out there. And I think 9973.8RS at million is crazy town.

I used to be on the 997GT Hype train until I owned my 05 Ford GT. After a cross country road trip in the Ford, my 997s felt like toys. That being said, based on your signature...I probably would probably sell the aqua RS and one other car...get a driver car (lke the white on black DZL that's for sale now for ~470ish), then fund something like a '05 Ford GT. But that's just me.
