Hi, I know the various XXX vs XXX threads have been done to death, but...
I'm thinking of possibly a change as an opportunity has come up and wanted to see if there are any new opinions on going from a 997.1RS to 991.2GT3 (manual). I've read various threads on Rennlist regarding this but they are often specific to 997.2RS.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

991.2 -> better car all around, quiet and docile when you need it, daily drivable, crazy fast 500hp, high performance envelope, all the nannies to make you fast on track (cheater car), more of a panty dropper/flashier (date nights and valet), all the amenities of a modern car, fun machine with a splash of old soul P-cars
997.1 -> a man's car, rough, bouncy, loud, "slow" 400hp, small, looks like a 911 with a wing, unless you're a car nerd nobody cares, no creature comforts, useless nannies, needs mods (seats), you have to drive it like you stole every time, you need to tame the beast on track (requires big ***** to squeeze out performance), 997 sweet spot of pure porsche driving and classic looks, forget about collectability and drive the **** out of it
you want to talk to people who have gone 997->991->997, it really depends on what you want, elitist will always favor a 997/6 GT or air cooled with soul over a mass produced beetle, mint 997 GTs are priced higher than new 991,992 GTs for reasons as stated above
Just my $.02

It's situational. I often consider swapping the .2 RS for a 991 RS simply because of where I live. The 997 is everything i love about cars, it is raw, visceral and frankly not comfortable. But i live in LA and will often not drive it because of how terrible traffic is so a 991 and its refinements (beyond pdk) sounds more usable at times.

Nothing wrong with scratching an itch. It just may cost you a little $ if you decide the 991 is not for you, and you want to get back into a 997. But you'll have that much more appreciation for the 997 the next time around (at least in my experience hah)

I currently own a 997.2 GT3 and a manual 991.2 GT3. My 997.2 is pretty heavily modified - 4.2 liter engine, JRZ 3-way dampers, cup car rear wing. It's very fast and quite visceral. The 991.2 is also very fast (much faster than stock 997.2), but its performance is far easier to access. As an all-rounder, 991.2 is superior. You immediately feel higher levels of refinement and comfort in the newer car. However, I regard my 997.2 as the more "special" car to drive.

I’ve never owned a 991.2 but I’ve driven them if I lived in LA, half my time was freeway and I was limited on garage…I wouldn’t be doing it in a 997 gt3. R8, M3 comp, spyder/speedster, 991.2 GT3\GTS, 718 GT4 all good options imo

991.2 will not be as visceral, but easier to drive, has an awesome shifter with no notching whatsoever, sounds different, and one can daily drive it. On track, it does not 'feel' as fast but will be significantly faster (for an amateur).

I started with a 997.1 GT3, then went 991.2 GT3 MT, then 991.2 GT3 RS and now back in a 997.1 3RS.
997 no question if asking me. 991s were good cars but I got bored of them eventually, too much capability, too easy for street in my opinion. Can’t speak to track. Some would argue 991 is more usable but I even disagree with that, I think they are all equally compromised and have the same ultimate use profile. 997 is just the right size, more personality, more challenging.
All that said I totally get the need for change. I went to 991 fully knowing the above was likely to be the outcome. I had lots of fun with the 991s and appreciate the 997 more because of it so no regrets on any of it.

I think as one ages, the 991 generation is more appealing in that it's a bit easier to approach, easier to operate, and gives you most of what you enjoy in the 997 era cars.
Fortunately, I'm both much too stubborn and 'cheap' to replace my 997s as I love them both incredibly so and refuse to embrace the newer stuff.![ooops](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon501.gif)
Jokes aside, I actually love the 991 product line so much more now that the 992 product line is out. I really don't like the 992s as they take away even more of the driving experience. So, thanks to the 992, the 991 stock continues to rise. But, the 997 is the sweet spot above them all.

1. 1.2 GT3 is more jack of all trades. 7.1 RS is a focused scalpel. If you need your RS to do something it doesn't do well, add to your stable. I ordered a 992T for dates and weekends.
2. I regret letting go of some aircooled cars. Won't make that mistake again.
3. Your 7.1 RS will appreciate at a faster rate than the 1.2 GT3.

991 is "nicer" to drive - better if you ever have a passenger and are actually going somewhere. 991.2 GT3 manual is a really amazing car but if you could get a 992 manual why not do that. 997.1 is a great enthusiast car and collector and a wonderful car if you have great places to drive. In MN I realized that I rarely have great places to actually drive and that the 991 is much faster and easier to drive fast on track. As such I sold the 997 and purchased the 991.1 (so PDK obviously) - I think if I had to do it again I might have gone to a 991.2 manual though. The PDK is awesome in a GT3 in it's own right but long-term if I keep it I wonder if I will long for the manual. For me one reason for PDK is that family members could then drive the car.
Anyway - 997 is a keeper if you can afford to keep it, but I don't miss it and to the extent that I do I don't think I would if I had a 991.2 manual which has fantastic manners, engine, gearbox, looks, ergonomics, FRONT AXLE LIFT!, etc. In 20 years the 997 is the more "special" and more valuable car. I'm really glad I had a chance to own the 997 GT3.
