The shift cable end came off the linkage on my 997.2 GT3 this past weekend. I was able to push it back on, and it "popped" into place securely. I've since ordered new cables from Suncoast, but I'm concerned about driving now for obvious reasons. How confident should I be that it won't come off again? If it helps, I was not able to push it back off using both hands.

Thoughts?

OEM cables? Here is some info from OEM 996 experience - if you had not touched the cables prior and it came off out of the blue then I'd be careful about driving it, you might end up stranded. For OEM 996 the ends have either plastic or nylon that connects to the ball joint on linkage and can split over time and allow the ends to come off easier than they should.
You can pull the end off and look at it, you will see if it's split or not. Can tug on the connection too and see how easily it comes off, usually takes some force, I use two screw drivers, one on each side to spread the load and pry off the ball joint when removing on my car (966 GT2).
Not being able to easily push it back on seems like a good sign but then I wonder what caused it to come off in the first place
Thank you for the response. I feel the same way about driving it now. It popped off on a poorly executed quick shift from 3-4, and while I realize that's on me, I'm still hesitant to drive it aggressively until I change the cables.
As someone who has been stranded at night, on a backroad, on a blind uphill corner, with no cell reception because the linkage suddenly snapped... you might be fine, but I wouldn't want to be in that situation again! Good-luck with everything.

Yikes!
Yeah, I got lucky in that regard. I was only a few mile from home, on a back road.
I've looked into Numeric, but was advised to stick with OEM by my shop due to the noise. Same with cup cables. Stock lasted over 40k miles, so I'm gonna give them another go.
In regard to Functions First's cable ends, have you tried them? I looked at the installation guide on their site, but it was for the 997.1. Is it the same for the .2?
