Default First time GT3 owner - 997.2 - some questions!

All,

Happy to finally say I own a Porsche. It’s a 2010 997.2 GT3. PCCB, full leather, but no axle lift or dyn mounts. It’s everything I dreamed of and more. I did get lucky and the car has a Sharkwerks center bypass, it sounds awesome. Car pulls strong.

A question I have though - the car has a vibration at around 2750-3k rpm and it feels like the car is going to shake apart. It’s in every gear - it’s not drone, it’s like an intense vibration only at that rpm. Any ideas? Also on a cold start today, saw quite a bit of white smoke in my rear view mirror. Car had sat for like a day.

Welcome and congrats on the purchase!

The 997 GT3 definitely has some strange harmonics that occur right around 3k RPMs, although in my experience this is above 3k not below 3k, although maybe that has to do with my car being a 7.1 and yours being a 7.2. If you have a lightweight flywheel (stock on a .2RS but an upgrade on a .2 GT3) a lot of guys will recommend installing the Dundon Harmonic Dampener to help with the harmonics. Hopefully some others can chime in as well.

White smoke happens. Blue smoke will too. Normal Mezger.

mine has that vibration too (it buzzes my left door handle), but only at exactly 3k (not above, nor below), and ONLY when its cold. Once I'm about 4-5 minutes into a drive warm-up, it goes away. I have stock .2 DMFW.
Mine is not that bothersome. And if I put a finger on my door handle when its still cold, and run it past the 3k mark, I barely notice the vibration (so its the door handle buzz that reminds me to stay away from 3k for a few minutes, Lol).
It's done that since I bought it 3 yrs ago, and has always been the same. I just literally short shift the car for the first 3-4 minutes while I exit my community & get out to a larger roads.
Sounds like yours is a little more aggressive. Seems the reports we get here on RL vary quite a bit car-to-car. Some have it, some don't, some are in-between.

smoke upon startup is normal. Sometimes mine does it, sometimes I get very little smoke. Doesn't seem to matter if it has sat for weeks, or I just drove it the day before. Sporadic on the startup smoke.

Congrats on the purchase!! You're going to LOVE IT!!!

awe man, 8Lug,... so good to see you post that above. I was pulling out of garage the other day, turned the wheel sharply to get ready for 2 point turn to go further up my driveway, started to move & heard a faint crack in the right front coil spring that I had never heard before. It's been cold recently here, and that day the temps rose to almost 60 degrees so I took a nice drive.

I had never heard that one before (... & wondered if I would ever hear it again)

These cars have SO much character & personality

In your original post you stated that it "feels like the car is going to shake apart". This is definitely not my experience from having driven several GT3s, including my own obviously. There is a distinct small vibration which I would describe more as a lack of smoothness, and it's enough to make some interior pieces like door handles and dash buzz a little bit as you go through this RPM range, but I have never felt anything close to what you are describing, where it would feel like the car would shake apart. If your vibration is causing more than some light buzzing, I would suggest having the engine and transmission mounts checked. Are your engine mounts stock or were they replaced with more rigid ones?

it’s funny you say that because after I posted that I realized “shaking itself apart” was an aggressive way to put it lol. It’s just a vibration I wouldn’t expect from a 140k car, but I’m learning these are just different. Which I am fully ok with. I didn’t buy it to be refined!!!

it’s a slight harmonic seeming vibration that goes through the whole cabin (I can feel it through the pedals as well). Nothing earth shattering, almost like a buzzing sensation. Only lasts for like 3-400 rpm.

That's normal. The cars with dynamic engine mounts seem to mask this slightly better, albeit my experience comparing both is very limited.

@S856SPD J Bxstr mentioned it in his post #2,... and you may not yet know the answer to his inquiry,.... but it is really worth your time to figure out whether your car as a Lightweight Flywheel.

That would make a big difference as we all compare the degree to which we feel NVH

How do I check if it has a lightweight flywheel? Was that OEM or would it have been installed aftermarket? Is it a common mod?

It is probably not easy to tell unless you compare it to another GT3 or RS. I just had a lightweight flywheel installed in my GT3 and the revs increase faster, enough for me to tell the difference. Another more obvious tell-tale sign is the chatter/rattling noise at idle and up to 3k RPM. It goes away once the clutch pedal is depressed.

Most use the OEM RS4.0 clutch and lightweight flywheel. In theory, a different crank pulley should have been installed with it. Pic of the difference below.
