Had the 997.1 RS on the lift to change oil and started wondering if I should take off the cosmoline. I've seen several RS's that have sold recently that had it removed and I must admit it does look better! Additionally, I am located in the "South" and engine protection isn't a concern. I did start wiping it off and realized this would not be an easy job. Before moving on: would it add or detract from the car's value to take it off? What are the best cleaners to use if I decide ultimately to remove it?

Personal preference. Some would say keep it, as it's a protective coating and serves a purpose. Others may say it was meant to protect the cars during initial shipment and served its purpose. If you haven't researched Dry Ice cleaning... boy are you in a for surprise at the transformation. This is the best overview video I've seen so far:

They just released Part 2 this week and you can see more of the undercarriage detailing that you're after

If it bothers you, I'd remove it. Otherwise I'd leave it. Once you remove it, then it's gone forever. So you can always remove it in 5 years from now if it starts bothering you.

Personally I like the additional layer of protection, although I don't drive on salty roads.

I don't think most buyers would care either way, but like most things with cars, I'd rather be given the option when buying (either keep or remove the cosmoline) rather than not having an option and having it already removed.

Remove it. I don’t have it in mine and it’s perfectly fine, plus it looks great.

I like it removed but it does detract from originality. I'm assuming one could always reapply it so do what you want to. I removed mine only because I was under the car and didn't realize what I was doing 10 years ago. Thought it was dried on oil from the RMS fix.

I love it. I even sprayed my new truck with Cosmoline. It's a mess, doesn't look great after many years, but it works.

Thanks for the input. Leaving it as is. Bottom line for me is it's the way it came from Porsche when I bought the car from Brumos and a pain for me to remove correctly.

.2s don't have it and it looks much nicer and cleaner.

If I owned a silver / orange (the BEST color combo IMO) 7.1 RS.
I'd clean it off, but I have issues.
I used purple ZEP, Some spray on orange cleaner, simple green, water washes all mixed in with mechanical agitation (brushes, 000 steel wool) to clean my soon to depart 996 GT3.

Dry ice blast probably faster, but I was quoted > $2000 even with a very clean starting point.

But what about the value and originality?!

Kidding, of course.

Love a sparking clean silver crankcase.

I'd leave it since I never look under the car anyways.
