997.1 engine

Yeah from what I've read I agree with Steve.
I spent yesterday reading about the 991 GT3s and it culminated with the hilarious video I re-posted.
The finger follower nightmare on those engines are unbelievable. There's also a thread about the 4 recent GT3s at Spa with blown engines AND transmissions. Unbelievable, so it wasn't just the .1 engine-
Just go to search, 991 GT3, put engine in title search
No wonder all GT3 rally cars are still Mezger/997s

The 3.9 is the "normal" GT3 experience turned up to 11. Same delivery and response, just more power.
The 4.1 is still the linear NA experience, but with so much extra torque it drives quite differently. You can toodle around in 3rd and 4th most of the time. It requires a bit more care since it has enough torque to break the tires loose in almost any gear above 3000 rpm. It doesn't smack you like a turbo, you just have to pay attention.
The 4.1 is a big jump from 3.6, but it isn't a stretch or unreliable. It does cost about 2x vs a 3.9, though.

does this mean "caution" or "upkeep"?

The 3,6 is a gem. I would keep what you have. Too many unknowns and issues with the 991 for me to make the switch.

"Now get me my GT4"... "Third gear is broken" could have been added at the end
What a nightmare, they had to replace a whole lot of them
And, your 997 Mezger GT3 has a Getrag transmission
But upon further reading, I think the GT4s have Getrag gearboxes with the 3rd gear failures, I thought they were Aisins

in your opinion, are you saying the bolded statement above for both RS & non-RS?
... just trying to jog my memory,... but from what I recall,... non-RS do not have the same problems as with cam actuators, cam bolts coming loose, NVH w/ LWFW (hence the need for ATI harmonic balancer)
(incidentally & non-related, there were production runs of cam actuator bolts that had problems too, but P Motorsport were not using the same as what regular production line used w/ aluminum core / steel outer shell type bolts)
I say all of this, because the OP for this thread did not specifically call out RS. In fact I think he is actually asking about non-RS GT3.
... just so we can be crystal clear

Keep in mind the motorsport engines do not have the variocam system the street cars do.
The .2 put on both intake and exhaust. .1 i believe was just vario on intake.

JB911 - that video is indeed hilarious. Thanks for posting it (I had not yet seen it)
..... Many other iterations have also been made from that movie scene - my kiteboarding buddies did one too... also hilarious.
Hopefully we will hear back from OP 74goldtarga, on what his decision is,... especially since not a active RL poster since 2005 (but it did spur on some good conversation here anyway!!)

I'm keeping the 997.1. It's my FAVORITE shape of all GT cars regardless of generation. Am I the only one that likes the shape of the rear wing on the .1? My only other temptation is a 2021 PDK GT4 for track use. But my wife doesn't like the look of the GT4 - I'm pretty sure she said "so you always have to have a GT3" or something like that. As I recall there is a little tiny set-screw in the intake of the 3.8L that can drop into the engine and wreck it. But maybe that's for the 3.6 as well. The 997.1 is an antique and a rare-ish classic. I got my doors blown off by a 991.1 on track my one time out by a driver that is not faster than me so I know that each generation is definitely faster but I think I will have fun tracking the 997 GT3 anyway. I'm trying to sell the 944T so that I can spend more time with the GT3.

991.1 GT3 is the only GT3 I would not buy, due to the finger follower problem. I know everyone will say it isn’t that big of a deal, but considering our family has had an IMS bearing go, I’m of the population that has had the problems that people say are hyped on forums. Also had a DSG trans on an Audi go, even with mostly highway driving and regular servicing. Another problem that everyone says only happens on forums.
Regarding intake bolt, that was an 7.2RS issue only I believe. Bolt would get sucked into the engine from the intake. There was a recall for this I think. They should be fixed by now is my guess.
Regarding cam actuator problem. 3.8RS or 3.8 non RS with LWFW upgrade seem to be most effected. I do remember FLT6SPD mentioning he had camshaft actuator bolts back out on his 3.6RS (with LWFW) which I think has convinced me to keep my DMFW on my standard 7.1 GT3.
When it comes to driver feel and involvement, I don’t think much can top a 997 GT3. Whether on street or track.

I agree JB. But I also hold stock in what Spyerx has to say too. But he only said he "read about it" on the forums. I don't recall reading about the non-RS having cam actuator problems (DMFW). Although I do recall hearing about the intake bolt, and yes I agree my memory recalls that being a RS only thing.
Regardless, we are just nit-picking, cuz all of this can be remedied, and we are holding onto the best of breed.
Good to hear 74GoldTarga is holding onto his .1
I too have had the itch to drive (on a regular basis, so I could really compare), a 991.2 4.0 manual. But I will also wait until all the hoopla has settled down. Once all the dust has settled with 992 GT3's, and the Touring bubble comes back to reality, we may see some deals in the next couple years, that could tempt a few of us to try one out. I need a friend to get one so I can spend a few days with it.
