Serpentine belt help, got stuck

Default Serpentine belt help, got stuck

Doing a few maintenance items on the .1 and got stuck at the belt. Got the old belt off and verified that the new belt was the same. However getting the new belt around the last pulley is proving to be a little challenging.

Verified that the belt routing is correct, per the image below.

Does anyone have any tips on what it takes to get thru this last step? I'm alternating between the alternator and the free wheel pulley that's attached to the alternator.

Compare new belt to old belt for size. I’ve had a replacement once that had correct part number on belt, but was just small enough to keep it from being installed. Should go on fairly easy, if routing is correct and idler pulley turned to minimum.

I sized them up but wasn't super precise about it. The old belt may have been a tad bigger but I attributed that to stretch. I'm thinking, even if I do get it on, the tension pulley will be at the minimum mark. I will not be able to remove it unless I remove a pulley wheel or cut the belt.

If this belt doesn't fit, then what to do as I was looking to install an OEM part on it? Guess I'll have to get a Continental belt.

Try routing belt onto all pulleys except ac. Turn tensioning pulley nut to move it to minimum position (maximum clearance), while there then try and slip onto ac pulley.

Or leave alternator for last. My engine not Mezger, but very similar. First time I had a devil of a time getting it back on.

I'm going to wait till the am and then remove the new belt, size it against the original belt as get as close as I can on seeing if they are exact. Then I'm going to try to reinstall the old belt and see if it's me or the belt. If the old belt goes on I'm going to call my parts guy at Marin and have him run my vin and do a check on the part number. I don't see how that's going to help unless something at Porsche changed as both part numbers (old and new belt) are the same.

One thing I don't understand is why the instructions state to loosen the Servo pump bolts. That doesn't sound like well.....sound advice. I already tried that and it didn't help my situation.

I'm wondering if these instructions are instructing to route the belt according to the numbers leaving #7 ad #8 for the last pulleys to get the belt. I have not done this. Will try in the am before I try the old belt again.

Important point is, if belt sitting on edge of any of the pulleys, belt will not go on. I’ve done that before also.

I've snaked a belt around these engines several times. Never had an issue, but I always leave the pulley below the alternator to be the last one to do. Get the belt around the alternator pulley and the one at the bottom left and then push it around the pulley below the alternator. Make sure you have the tensioner pulley fully pressed in with the wrench, while you do that, for the extra slack.

These belts shouldn't stretch significantly since they have a fabric component as well as rubber.

I also had no issue threading the belt, and the 3 bolts don't have to be loosened. I got the new version of the Continental belt, and believe it or not it's available at AutoZone under $30.
The belt says Made In Germany, and Porsche doesn't make their own belt-pretty sure it's the Continental with Porsche logo on-this new belt phased out the older ones, I wanted the newest version. I posted in this thread:

This am... Success. Yes, the last pulley to attack is the tensioner. Even though the diagram states to wrap the tensioner as the 7th and the free wheel pulley as the 8th, I didn't have success this way so I did the freewheel 7th and the tensioner 8th and it worked. Thanks to all that helped me out. Love this forum.

On the link I posted there’s a video of a rallye car who’s belt failed-I think it did damage to the airbox and center muffler-
Belt is cheap and doesn’t take too much time to replace👍
