So, earlier this week a local buddy called me up and said we should go on a 'end of the season' fall drive. When I asked him which car he was bringing from his formidable collection he mentioned he was leaning towards the RS 4.0. In that case, I knew what had to be done!
Due to Covid-19 and plenty of lackluster events (personal, professional, etc.) I have kept my GT3 RS cooped up and partially insured this year. I've had the GT2 fully insured and have been using it as my fun car, but knowing the RS 4.0 was coming out I just HAD to do the right thing and prep the GT3 RS for its one and only planned drive of the year. The night before our drive I got the tires aired up, checked fluids, got insurance sorted out, and even had to get new copies of my insurance cards and license plate tags applied before the car was ready to roll. Even despite taking all these steps, I knew the gas was pretty old in the tank and, although I only use ethanol free fuel for my GT3 RS, I was still a bit suspect of the quality of it.
The day of the drive I absolutely leaped out of bed with a purpose, as this was going to be a very special day. Indeed it was! I drove the car gingerly to a station along the way that had 100 octane unleaded at the pump and filled the car up, then met my buddy near Tacoma, WA and we headed out for a 300 mile day of pure driving bliss. Highlights included parking them in scenic locations, passing each other repeatedly on two lane roads, and of course listening to the symphony of twin high compression Mezgers screaming for glory above 8000 RPM echoing off the face of mountain walls. From mountains to sound we drove, stopping to take photos and eat lunch, but the day was all about driving and enjoying these absolutely outstanding machines. I couldn't stop from smiling, and the memories of this epic day will take me through the winter season with a smile on my face. The GT3 RS didn't miss a beat (of course) and despite it's lack of use this year was like a delighted puppy that was so happy to be off its leash.
As much as I dearly love my 997.1 GT2 (and I really, really do!) there is absolutely nothing like a GT3 to really get emotions stirring, and there is plenty of reason that they are revered so highly in the world of even Porsche 911s. I always joke with my buddies that discovering the magic of a GT3 is akin to finding religion for the first time, except we owners know that it's not really a joke at all. To have two of the absolute greatest 911 GT3 road cars together and being driven enthusiastically was just a day for the ages.
Enough talk...here are the pics!
Starting off the day with 100 octane fuel just to make sure my old girl had the most octane possible for a great planned workout! She's just so pretty I cannot even help myself. Since it's her only time out this year you cannot even blame me! The two RS' together for the first time, about to begin their mission! One of our first stops by a scenic lake Another stop, this time more strategic to make sure we had a gap for a winding road ahead and so traffic could clear ahead of us RS 4.0 out in the wild! RS 3.8 with a stunning backdrop! Time for a lunch break in a very small town The two pilots raising a pint and talking about our love for older era manually shifted 911s Although identical in appearance, one of these is more special than the other! Our trusty steeds waiting for the most exciting roads which lay ahead Who cannot smile while driving and listening to these amazing cars? Our final site seeing stop after an absolutely magical road alongside a mountain One last look at these two beauties together On my way home, and yet still far from home at this point (near Mount Rainier) Final fuel stop of the day to top up with ethanol free 92 (her usual) Back home safe after a magical day out! So happy to have lived such a grand adventure in this lousy year. GT3 RS driving = BLISS!
You are a great writer! I almost felt like I were there (almost!). I don’t envy your winters, but I do envy your easy access to amazing roads. Metro Phoenix is literally “driving purgatory”!
So much of what you said resonates with me. When my buddy and I take out our RS's I feel the same excitement and emotions. It's not quite the same when you drive alone.
That's awesome. Shame it was the only drive of the year. Hopefully you get a few more soon.
Unfortunately, 2020 has been that kind of a year for me...and I know I'm not alone either. But I'll take one glorious day out in these cars over none any time!

Hahaha, you may have had a slight unfair advantage in that feeling!

Thank you very much for your kind words as I do enjoy sharing my experiences when possible, so it's greatly appreciated. Our winters definitely make for a shorter driving season, but also rekindle our passion for driving when we finally do get to take the nice cars out.

Although none of us feel bad to drive our cars alone, it's so true that having more than one out together just amplifies the entire experience!

We appreciate it, and will be planning another one with a couple of different Porsches when we can get away with it. Those roads were just made for our cars!
