Unhappy 997.2 GT3 RS engine failure...

My 997.2 GT3 RS engine (approx 20,000 miles) has just failed due to the flap in the air intake manifold disintegrating.

I know this was an issue and the car previously had WC-51 completed back in 2013 which was meant to fix the issue. Is there likely to be any damage other than to the engine? I just had a new clutch and flywheel installed less than 100 miles ago.

Fortunately the car is still under warranty but this is very frustrating nevertheless given I thought the issue had been addressed.

Finally, what is the likelihood that Porsche will still have new engines lying around..? Dealer is still going through the motions with the factory to process the claim under warranty.

That is bad news, if you get in a bind I have an extra 3.8 motor

you should of had these campaigns completed, one of them is to replace the resonance tube which is what failed on yours.
WC512 Replace resonance tube / 6600 Workshop campaign
WC081 Re-program DME control unit (GT3) / 6600 Workshop campaign
WC091 Replace clutch pedal switch / 6600 Workshop campaign
keep us posted, also try to have the lines pinned before installation of the replacement.

Is the engine completely lost or is any of it salvageable?

Yes, WC512 was completed in 2013. The dealer cannot explain how the failure happened.

As I understand it, unfortunately the former...

if the car was not under warranty I'd be fighting like hell to have this covered given the history of the cause.

porsche has motors / parts / cases

On the latter, they have gotten very expensive the last 2 years from what I understand, likely supply is shrinking.

If the dealer is going to tear down the engine and repair vs. rebuild, I would ask very directly how many 997.2 RS engines their tech has rebuilt. :-) Some dealers have amazing techs, others more parts swappers. Where, independents are likely much more competent in rebuilding these, as they do them daily (Orbit, PMNA, BBI, and a long list of others...)

Since this is a warranty claim, I would want a new engine put into the car. Not a rebuild. In the case of a warranty claim, I would want as much damage done as possible so that an entire engine needed to be replaced instead of rebuilt. In the case of not having warranty, I would prefer a rebuild due to cost.

Agreed with the above - I'll definitely be pushing for a new engine. The car has had every recall and been fully serviced with Porsche including an extensive service in January.

The service manager wasn't sure if Porsche still had new engines available but it sounds from the above like a replacement should be possible.

Yeah a new engine is possible. I would also make sure that if they rebuild the engine compared to replace, they extend the engine warranty further. Maybe write you a Fidelity Warranty for it.

If you get a new engine, you will have a 2 year 24k mile warranty from Porsche.

Was this a CPO car or aftermarket warranty? If the former, shouldn't have all the outstanding campaigns been resolved before selling you the car?

Full Porsche extended warranty (I am in Europe) and all campaigns were undertaken on time.

As mentioned the manifold intake campaign was completed in 2013 and it appears that the replacement part has failed.

Similar thing happened to my mates 7.2 RS approximately a year ago. The car had c.75k kms on the clock and was in its final year of warranty (2010 MY). The dealer rebuilt the engine, a new engine was never on the cards. FYI the intake flap had been previously replaced under the recall programme. Seems like the 3.8 engine is still susceptible to this malady and IMHO this potential failure is more financially taxing than the famous pinned lines issue, surprised that we don't hear more about it on forums (unlike the pinned lines story).

Sorry for my ignorance of the issue... I just bought a 2010 GT3. Does this effect all 3.8 Mezgers? Is there a preemptive step besides the recall campaign?
Is it something that should be regularly checked and shows signs of starting to fail or does it just let go one day?

There are more known 997.2 RS engine failures?
Or it only effects few cars?
