Default Which variant for street fun?

Open to all 997 GT3 and RS variants. Which one brings you the biggest grins for street and backroads driving? Also open to doing a mod or two if that’s what it takes. Words that describe what I’m looking for include: raw, analog, and linear.

Other car I’m cross shopping is an F430 manual or F1 in case anyone has any experience with that car. Ruled out a Scud because interior is too spartan for my tastes.

Not interested in a 996 because just can’t get over the looks and anything air cooled is going to come next and fill a different slot.

Memorial Day greetings to all.

Hmmmm,.... maybe try to find that ultra rare 997 RS that came with sport seats instead of LWBS?? ... I only say that because your post seems to lean towards longer day or weekend trips out on the Mtn roads. But then again there are plenty of guys out there that LOVE the LWBS even for street and weekend Mtn road fun. So that part is very individualistic (my wife & I are both narrow in the hips, but we still prefer a more comfy seat, and don't mind the slight movement we get when pushing the car hard in corners).

Me personally, I wanted everything to do with the regular GT3. I wanted the raw exhilarating feelings (especially the sound, which is why I went Sharkwerks), but also more subdued looks out on the street. It takes my wife & I a little bit of suburbia driving to get to the fun roads, and so we prefer the no flashy graphics or big wing (which is just not needed anyway on the Mtn roads we drive).

So I guess the only area I would chime in on, that could sway you one way or another (GT3 -vs- RS), would be NVH. If you LOVE loud exciting exhaust sound, PLUS more of the road noise that comes with less sound deadening in the RS, and maybe even a bit harsher ride -vs- comfort,.... then go RS.

But in the end, you'll love the 997 GT3 verses any other variant. It is, by far, no doubt, the sweet spot.

UPDATE: Ok, I just re-read my first sentence above,... and it occurred to me,... if the RS is where you want to be,... just get one with the LWBS & take em out / store em for re-sale, and pop in a set of regular 4-way seats. That's always an option too,.. AND the RS will hold value better.

Hope you're all having a great Memorial Day weekend!!

Any 997 Gt3 will fit the bill. It all depends on how much you want to spend on having this fun.

If I had a choice, I'd have a .1 orange RS. I just love that car. I could get a .2 Rs for the same money and looks like a new 991.1 is getting better price wise. However, the 997.1RS is my cats meow. It is all I need to have fun a good day.

A special shout out to everyone who served! HMD

Have you had extensive seat time in the .1 RS to prefer it to the .2? Not knocking, just always fascintated by the .1 vs .2 debate. I've driven both but not extensively enough to make my own opinion yet.

I actually like my C2S better for back roads. The car is plenty fast enough and is just more compliant on varying degrees of surface quality.
The clutch is more manageable and it's noise isn't so loud that I can't listen to music.

Just my 2 cents.

Have only driven a 997.1 GT3 on backroads, no other 997 GT variants. It was perfect on backroads. Never have been in such a fun car, which is why I want one next. I just sold my 997.2 C2S with SPASM and lots of other sport items, and to me the GT3 was a great driving experience and very engaging.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts! I’ve had some fantasies of taking a 997.1 GT3 and deleting the PASM w/ Ohlins R&T coilovers to make it an even more analog and linear experience. If anyone has done this or can comment your input would be valuable.

Dont bother with an adjustable suspension...u will just chase making it as good as stock

adjustable are magic when set up properly, but it takes someone who is an expert in that field

The different gearing on the 3.8 RS makes it truly satisfying on the street as the power-band is very meaty. If not for the low ride height and the carbon buckets it would be quite easy to drive regularly. It depends if the RS is worth the price difference of course, but it's a real sweetheart on the street, particularly the twisty bits of course.

Mooty are there 3.8's in the 991.2's?

Even more important I'm reading that the 991.2 is night and day different then the 991.1. If anyone would know well, it's gotta be you. Opinion?

yes 991.2 is FAR superior than 991.1 its not just dynamics. the engine has a lot of difference.

Personally, I've been amazed at the GT3 suspension's compliance and its ability to keep the tires on the ground and maintain traction on even the roughest of back roads.

When I first got my GT3 I was frustrated with the radio turning on every time with the car. Until I figured that a long press would permanently turn it off. The only music I need is the Mezger's :-)
