Too many under-driven garage queens. I agree, 40k is a joke unless it is a race engine or something totally tweaked. I would 'persevere' if I had to refresh my Pumpkin engine (SW 3.9?), but I am counting on at least 100k before I have to do that. So far, so good.
I sold my 997.2 GT3 with 38k miles on it and never had any issues. That includes DE’s, cruising, etc. The next owner took it to a DE right after buying it too. lol.
Got into an RS with 21k miles and couldn’t be happier. Screw garage queens.... These cars love to be driven. (Starbucks doesn’t count)

Totally agree. 72k miles on mine with 3-4 track days/year. Only problem ever was a blown water coolant line, otherwise just consumables. Burns no oil, gets red-lined weekly. PCCBs are at 75%, I've only replaced the pads which were at 50%.
40K miles isn't high for these cars. I thought I saw a 996 GT3 with 150k+ miles on the other board.
OP wants to drive the car 2,000 miles/year - that's 40 miles or less than an hour a week. That's not much.
47k on mine. very reliable car, and i drive it HARD. Had a clutch or 2, needed a proper diff, otherwise just consumables. Oh, a PASM shock went out when i first had it. Very reliable car especially when driven as hard as they are.
The OP already reached out to me privately but I bought a 2010 997.2 RS 3.8 back in 2013 with 59k miles on it and it passed it's PPI with flying colors (except for the PCCB rotors). I bought the car after enlisting the folks on RennList to help calm me down about the rotors and have been enjoying it immensely. The car now has 67k miles and never fails to bring a smile to my face. I'm adding a high mileage 997.1 GT2 to my collection now as I definitely am not afraid of mileage. I joke that my GT cars come to my care to retire from their lives as real thoroughbreds, but they give me immense satisfaction.
Care and condition are everything. These cars are built so well!
I'm one who actually drives my GT3RS an now wishes to sell. It is odd to me how many potential buyers discuss the car as a "driver" to be added to their stable so that their other GT3 can remain a non-driver. To me having some miles is liberating so you can actually fully enjoy the car however you like without fear of "ruining" it for the next owner. What is that joke about dating a supermodel but not having sex with her so you can save her for the next guy to thrash?

I bought my .1 RS with 30k, now has 42k no issues.
Just sold my 964 turbo bought with 40k sold with 100k on it. I am convinced driving it 4K+ per year (and regular maintenance) is what made it absolutely faultless for 13yrs.

I'm interested to hear how your gt2 compares to your rs.

I will be very happy to tell the tale when the time comes (hoping in less than a month). You'll probably be even more entertained to hear that I've never even driven any GT2s before of any vintage so the one I'm buying will be my first.
My GT3 has over 50k miles and its running like a champ with 5+ track days/year. Just only recently done the coolant lines/pipes, water pump, belts, thermostat and all the wear items. Car runs even smoother now and stronger than ever. My mechanic has the same GT3 with 9k miles and it feels exactly the same in tightness and feel, the only thing that's different is I have a bit more rattles in cabin that needed to be addressed, and maybe the shocks are a bit less cushioned.
I'm firmly in the 'drive your car camp' - I bought my 13k mile 997.1 in 2013 to replace my Mk5 Gti as my only car. (I live in NYC so I don't need actually need it every day.) It now has 65k miles with a few track days, auto-X, countless road trips, and even a few Home Depot runs. From everything I've experienced and heard, high miles aren't problem on these cars.
I did weld the coolant lines (and replaced the clutch while I was there), but other than that is has all been consumables and fastidious maintenance. Love the car, never selling, and will keep adding miles. Pics from the city and the infield of the Watkins Glen 6 hour a few years ago:
