ebrake was off. the pads were just compressed on the rotor very hard. is there a decent write-up on the rear brakes on the 997.1 GT3? I did the job today, but i feel like it could have gone smoother.

did you open up the brake fluid reservoir? Usually I wiggle the caliper and it slides off.

997 should be easy.
But, before you start, check reservoir, open cap, spread pads using this tool
Amazon Amazon

check reservoir.
while pads in place, squeeze caliper piston all the way in.
Remove bolts and calipers
Remove pads
remove rotors.

Make sure you check reservoir after each change out, may need to drain.

one question - i don't see how i can use that tool with the caliper in place. do you mean, remove the caliper and then with the pads in place, use the spreader tool?

I just use and adjustable plier wrench to push the pistons in, or my hands. I don't see how the tool above would work, you would need one of the special 4 piston spreaders to get inbetween to push the pistons in.

my thoughts exactly. i used channel lock pliers and the old pads - spread the pliers in reverse.

You should be able to catch the ear of the pads with the tool, then spread..
