In France (Provence at least) when you have a car behind you and there is is no turn out, you turn on your right signal, slow by taking your foot off the gas, and hug the shoulder. The car behind you will understand and pass. Not everyone does this but it happens more often than not.
I've seen this as common practice in Romania as well

This is common practice among the locals around here (Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California). I do it during commute time only though when it's more likely to be locals - day trippers might get the wring idea

I receive and use flash-to-merge from passenger cars and 18 wheelers.
hazard flash as 'thanks' i've only ever seen from 18 wheelers and I'll do the same if they flash-to-merge me.
honestly, there is so little you can do in a car to communicate appreciation to other drivers, so the more it's used the better IMO
the love you take is equal to the love you make and all that

Hazards when you are disabled. If I see your hazards, I think YOU are disabled. As far as warning other drivers of slowing traffic, that is what brake lights are for.

I agree, but sometimes it's nice to warn people behind you if traffic is stopping suddenly. Newer Porsches automatically flash the rear brake lights when the driver brakes hard, so using the hazard lights is unnecessary.

As Hollywood1053 noted, this is common in Texas, and has been for as long as I can remember. On a two lane road, the slower car moves to the shoulder and, after passing, the overtaking car flashes hazard lights a couple of times to say "thank you". A friendly wave serves the same purpose, but is pretty useless at night or with heavily tinted rear windows.

O. P. I agree with the last couple of posts. what you’re doing to say thanks is fine and won’t be misconstrued. Anybody seeing you coming up fast from behind, and is obliging enough to let you overtake safely, will also have enough awareness to understand your “thanks” signal.
