DIY Custom Side Splitters >>
I felt the sides of the car were a little naked so decided to try some side splitters. The professional options out there were ridicules in price for what they are at $650 - $1500.
They turned out like what I was envisioning but took a lot of trial and error to get them right. Honestly a pretty cheap and easy addition though. The hardest part was figuring out how to fasten to the car. I didn't want to drill into the existing rocker panel like a lot of options require.
Goals with this project
Parts List. Nothing special here so source from your store or dealer of choice.
This was done on a base C2.2 so might not be the same for others. On the base C2.2 there are 4 rubber grommets per side that pop out of the existing rocker panel. My guess is these are for the GT2/GTS rocker panels to bolt up to. Once you pop those out you get a nice 3/4 hole to work with.
Cut the abs to 64x4.5. Round the edges off as you see necessary.
Measure the holes created from removing the grommets and drill or cut out of the ABS plastic. I cut from where the hole needed to be to the end of the ABS so it was adjustable.
Build your fastener using the washers, bolt and expansion nut (well nut). This is the key peace that took several trial and error options to come up with this. The rubber expansion nut slides into the 3/4 hole and when you tighten in down it expands to create a solid mount.
Mount the side splitter. I started with the front expansion nut and the rear 1.5 x 1/4 inch screw. Once you adjust in/out to your liking, then add the other 3 expansion nut. For me, lining up the edge of the splitter with the existing front and rear of the rocker panel looked best.
I left the rear mud flap in place. I thought that looked better and continues to function like a stock car with the mud flaps. They are removable if you don't like the look with the mud flap. Same procedure, just remove the mud flap first. NOTE: removing the mud flap will most likely require you to cut the ABS at a longer length.

Goals with this project
- Appearance. Even the look of the car out with the 991 front lip, black rear valance and custom rear spoiler.
- Add a little downforce.
- Light weight (3lbs).
- Fully adjustable and removable with no damage to existing parts.
Parts List. Nothing special here so source from your store or dealer of choice.
- 1/4 inch ABS plastic. Cut to 64x4.5 inches. If I had to do it again, I would do 64x5.
- (8) 3/8-16 x 1 expansion nuts (well nuts)
- (8) 3/8 x 1.25 inch bolts
- (20) large washers
- (10) smaller washers
- (10) lock washers
- (2) 1.5 inch 1/4 inch screws

thanks... pics don't really do it justice. IMO, it really looks great in person and brings it together. After putting one side on, the other side looked lame and boring.

Search Google for abs plastic sheet. I got mine from tap plastics. Have used them for a couple of things and great quality products every time. I just got a 10 inch by 72 inch sheet and cut to size. Now that I know the sizing, I'm sure you could order pre cut and then just round the edges and cut the holes. The sheet was 35 bucks I think. They have them in any thickness you want but 1/4 inch seems to be about right.
