CEL with 200 cell cats
Hi all:
I just had 200 cell sport cats installed and, for a few days, I've been very happy with them. However, just today my car threw the dreaded CEL. I reset it with dashcommand but it came right back. Here are the codes :
P2270 o2 sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 1 sensor 2
P2098 post catalyst fuel trim system too lean bank 2
P2097 post catalyst fuel system too rich bank 1
Sooooooo... I just ordered a Softronic tune yesterday and I suspect that's the cure, but....
I just had all o2 sensors replaced with new ones - could thatbhave anything to do with it? Bosch all around.
Any idea why bank 2 would be too lean while bank 1 would be too rich? Doesn't make sense to me.
Is this just a case of acclimation? Should I just disconnect the negative battery terminal and reset the ECU? The cats are nearly new HJS cats so I'd find it odd that they are the problem. The engine runs beautifully.
Thanks for your help with deciphering this!

I've used HJS in AWE system for over 8 years. I have gotten "insufficient cat" that can be addressed by installing 'entensions' to change sensor position. Never seen what you describe.
I would not install tune until you find cause. Just complicate things. Have had bad sensors right out of box, plus they are fragile and can be damaged. Imo look there first.

I would also suspect the O2 sensors, even though they are new. Not the first time that Bosch has run into quality issues. One thing that you can do is swap the O2 sensors, one for the other, to see if the error message follows the sensor. If so, you know the answer.

I just tried the old reset technique by removing the negative lead from the battery and letting the ECU "die." Hooked it back up 10 minutes later, no CEL (got the obligatory PASM, PCM, PSM failure notifications) and went on a spirited drive to get everything nice and toasty. 25 min later, still no CEL. Dunno if the o2 sensors were reporting yet, tho, as I didn't check their readiness status; I'll try that today.

Ugh. Reset worked for a few starts but the codes are back. Thanks for your insight, guys! Anyone else out there with a similar experience? Is it most likely that the brand new o2 sensors are faulty or is it more likely the cats failing... or something else? The engine runs extremely well although oil consumption is on the higher limit of what Porsche considers tolerable.
**edited to add - I just noticed that the rubber hose from the air box to the throttle body was loose - when the mechanic put it back on he didn't tighten the hose clamp at all. Is it possible that an intake leak such as this could have caused the problem?
Thanks all!

What a nightmare - took the car to Mark Cummings at Auto Sport engineering for a look-see. Diagnosis? Fatal bore scoring in cylinders 5&6. I am going to cut my losses and get out of the car. I think I'm done with water cooled 911s - going to find myself a nice 964 or maybe a 993 (one that's not outrageously priced) and call it a new day.
Thanks gents! I'll be back on the forums when I find my new direction.

Oh man.. that sucks. Never a good thing to hear. Worth a 2nd opinion? Seems odd you only noticed issues after cat install. Maybe separate issue that has been there a while.
Assuming. 1 car?
If you truly do get out of the car, hoping you can return some of recent upgrades. Tune since it wasn't installed?

Agreed with getting a 2nd opinion, bore scoring shouldn't trigger the CEL you've got but it could be unrelated. Best of luck to you.

Hi guys:
I sold my 2005 C2 in 2013... got into an e92 M3 but always pined for another 911. I bought my 2006 C2S last September and had been working on it over the winter. Pity about the engine but the whole thing has soured me on 997s. I know the air cooled engines have their foibles but damn, they seem to run forever when cared for. I found a 1992 C2 cab, no accidents, midnight blue with gray interior, 57k miles, brand new factory top, new brakes all around, and 60k service just performed - going to get it today - for the same price as a typical 997.1 C2S with the same mileage. Seems like a good direction for me! Wish me luck!

And the loose intake pipe could definitely be the cause of those codes. There is unmetered air getting into the motor and the sensors don't know how to account for it. Had an access cap on my left side RUF intake plenum come just slightly loose a few years ago and saw codes like these. It was so minor, had to smoke test the intake to find it, of course that was after changing plugs, coil packs, and all 4 O2 sensors.
The oil consumption and bore scoring are unrelated to the recent error codes after the cat install.
