Default Side view mirror glass turned brown

New member with a recently accquired 997.2 CS.
Car got a clean bill of health from porsche mechanic but the passenger side view mirror has turned brown.

Can the mirror alone be snapped out and replaced? I could not find a part number for it online nor any diy for the 997 on how to remove the glass. Has anyone else replaced this part?

Are you sure that it does not have a protective film on it? Films can turn brown, but I have never heard of a mirror changing color (unless it was exposed to heat?)

Positive there is no film.
If you Google 'side view mirror brown discolouration' plenty of hits from the BMW and acura community. So it seems like an issue faced by some. Nothing porsche specific that I could find with similar issue

Appreciate the help. Thanks. That's one expensive mirror for $400. Hope the installation is easy

So, is your mirror auto-dim? When my rear view mirror went bad I shipped it to radar-mirror and they did a great job. Quick turnaround and much less expensive than the new part. http://www.radar-mirror.com/Mirror_Repair.html. No affiliation.

Not sure if they do side mirrors also but may be worth a shot.

did you end up with a repair option or did you have to buy the new part for $490? I’ve got a failed outside mirror too.

That’s correct. I emailed and asked. I also emailed two other companies that were mentioned on here and 6spe*d to see if there are any other options besides the expensive replacement.

Does anyone have a DIY for the r&r process?

Very simple to replace.
I used these instructions when I repaired the locking mechanism in my passenger side mirror a few months ago, worked like a charm:
https://www.planet-9.com/reviews/cay...tallation.html

"First, you want to adjust your mirror so the innermost part is facing the car, and the outer edge is sticking out, as far as it goes.
Now, just simply pull on the mirror.
It may seem nerve-racking, thinking you might crack the mirror, but just give it a firm tug while providing as much support, and the mirror simply pops out. You'll hear the snaps on the back of the mirror disengage, and though it sounds like something broke, don't worry, it probably didn't."

Auto dimming side view mirrors
Just to update this thread, 3 yrs ago my passenger side mirror had turned brown. Had replaced it with a new one for around $400.
Now the driver side is brown. Wondering if there are any companies that offer to fix them. Last time I contacted a few none of them offered the service for outside mirrors only the inside rear view mirror.
Sucks to spend another $400-500.

Try a used part from a salvage yard? LA Auto Dismantlers or search via www.row52.com. Check eBay as well. I got a used side mirror for my Audi for about $30.

Just dimming, not heated? Should be able to find one on eBay. Of not just the mirror then the entire housing ...
