Track-day question
Hi all,
I have a 997.1 CS4 + X51 which I'm taking back to the track and had a couple of questions:
1) What is the right setting for the spolier. Leave on auto, leave it up, leave it down?
2) Does is really matter at all?
Thanks!

You can find other threads that indicate that spoiler operation is also dependent on engine temperature. It deploys at a lower speed when the engine above a certain temperature. If true, up will be better. But auto will take care of it for you.

The spoiler is probably the least important part on a track day. I would say for example a tire pressure gauge is more important but first of all: driving technique. I am a novice myself but realised early that just steering, positioning of the hands in different speed corners etc took quite some learning. Then braking points and cornering etc.
I don't know how experienced you are but i strongly recommend an instructor.
You will save both the car (brakes etc) and you will improve your lap time and enjoy the ride much faster.

Agree the spoiler is probally the least of your worries.
Some other threads have indicated that the spoiler up also helps cool the engine. If that is true, leaving it down could cause heat issues.

The spoiler up at speed helps. It helps with reducing lift at speed and I suspect contributes to more air flow through the engine compartment lid to help keep the engine compartment temperature down. This is important as the engine will of course be working real hard. While the engine is kept "cool" by water/oil cooling the exhaust system will get superheated and all it has is air flow through the compartment to help cool it.
There are other things you should be concerned about too. Be sure the engine oil is fresh and the brake fluid is recently flushed/bled.
Remove all loose items from the cabin, under the seats, in the glove box, center console, and door storage bins.

literally all other things (mentioned here) are more important for track than spoiler consideration. however, in re: the OP question, macster is spot on with the simple fact that if you dont want it going up/down/up/down/ad infinitum, and possibly extending motor/piston life, then leave it up while on track. i do "just because".

Thank you all for the info and tips.
+1 on working with an instructor. It's been, by far, the best way to get seconds off my lap time.
Yup, still working on taking seconds off and not tenth's of a second :-)
