Default Shift Light

I finally installed a shift light in my 07 C2S. Have one in my 914-6 and had one in my 77 930. SharkWerks had great instructions for getting to and taking out the ECU behind the right rear seat. I found a drawing identifying the wiring to the pins that supply the triggers to the spark plugs -- the connecter closest to the right side of the car. I found a ground there and the trigger feed. Couldn't find switched 12V there so I took it from the fuse box. I tried phone wire for the long run but it didn't work well. Ended up using 18 gauge wire and connected that to the wire/connecter supplied with the light, which was tiny, perhaps 22 gauge. The light came from Ecliptech in Australia. https://ecliptech.com.au/shift-p2/ No affiliation, just a satisfied customer. Tony there was very helpful. Light was easy to program. I like it.

Very cool. Can you adjust the meter so that at a certain RPM the light turns yellow or red, etc? In other words, is it fully customizable?

I don't think so. Check out their web site. I know that other shift lights I installed had to be ordered with specified light colors. Ask Tony. At the programmed end, they all flash.

I don't get it.. dont you just wait until the Rev limiter kicks in and then shift

Seriously, this looks pretty cool. So there is no tach out, you had to tap the spark triggers ?

Awesome! I have one of the new P2s in the box ready to install once the car is out of storage. 997.2 ECUs are very different. So i'll be trailblazing the DIY on it. Can you provide closeups of how you mounted the lights to the steering column cover? It looked like a tight fit.

Yes you can adjust the RPM range. THe new P2 even has a different setting for launch control that it can sense automatically. The engineering is phenomenal.

No tach out in the 997s. That ended with the 996. You have to tap a coil lead which is more accurate anyway.

mounting on top of the steering column was easy. they provide sticky back velcro. leave enough wire so you can pull it off to easily program. there are 3 additional wires to program other things, but it was over my head. the little square display can show voltage, rpm, and more. very well engineered.

ah, now I understand an earlier question: yes, the rpm at which the first green light comes on is programable. I set it at 3K. That is about 75 MPH in 5th - just so I remember. Where the last light comes on is programable too. I set it at 6,500. I am conservative.

Thanks !

More accurate but isn't it more risky? I would think if someone didn't do a good splice job, down the road you could have issues with resistance on a given coil lead. That would mess with coil tolerances I would guess.

Never tapped a coil lead so might just be my miss understanding of how it works.

It's a fair point. Anyone doing this (looking at you, OP) hopefully puts a low amp fuse in-line to prevent exactly this.

Default Wire

i had instructions saying the green and white wire. See the picture. There are six spark wires so I think any will do. I'll post the graphic identifying each wire when I get to my office.

found the graphic on-line somewhere and pasted instructions. I used pin 5 for the ground.

^^^Just noting for everyone that this graphic is for the 997.1. The 997.2 DFI ECU is completely different.
