Getting a 997.2 but not sure which one to get...
Hi All,
As the title reads, I'm contemplating of upgrading my current 02.2002 996 C4S to a 997.2 either CS or C4S with PDK (2009-2012).
So, when browsing the different available 997.2 models out there I often come across 345, 385 and 408 (additional Porsche Power Pack "Porsche Performance-Paket 408 PS") hbp models (3.614L or 3.8L) and was wondering what the general consensus is for which model to go for?
I do not want a Convertible, Targa, GTx series or Turbo 997.2 but as said above either the Carrera S, Carrera 4S (or maybe even a plain Carrera 4).
Generally speaking it seems like the main difference is the acceleration from 0-100km/h which only is showing as a 0.3 second difference which makes no difference to me tbh and of course the hbp..
I believe the 997.2 series engines are more or less bullet proof compared to the 996 (mark I and II = never had problems with mine) and 997.1
I currently have an eye on a 11.2009 997.2 C4S PDK (385hbp), with only 20'000 km on the clock at an reasonable price but will not take the leap before beginning of the summer - should it ever arrive ;-)
Any pointers highly appreciated indeed
PS. I'm seriously going to miss my good ol' and yes trustworthy 996 C4S... It has never caused me any issues and a great introduction to 911 ownership, but Mrs Frank996 wants something newer without manual transmission... This time the mrs won ;-)

There is not a general consensus at all. Which is how we came to have such a variety. Sure Porsche marketing had something to do with it but its easy to imagine a fair amount of market research lended itself to that as well.
The differences between the various designations of these cars has far more intricacy than just power output. I would disagree that the "main" difference comes down to acceleration.
As has been said numerous times in recent threads, perhaps best to sort out the "must have" options and search for a car based on those.

Go to a dealer and drive a few.... only way to know.
Personally I always wanted 4 wheel drive but I don't like the way they handle..... just me. I don;t like the way a cab looks and the two I drove didn't feel as stiff as I like ... just me. Other models like turbo and GT3 were just too expensive given my value system.... just me.
The short of it? All Porsche sports cars are fun to drive and really great. I feel the price vs value diminishes really fast above the base models... but for all intents and purposes, all 911s are the same.
Peace

Since you have a C4S now, I suggest a 997.2 C4S for you. Think of it being similar to what you have now, bit better in every aspect. I had a 997.1 C4S, liked it but went to a Cadillac, then got the Porsche bug again....this time I drove a 997.2 S first....not to stir things up in here....but I did not like the light feeling front end and it felt a bit darty in handling....then I drove a 997.2 C4S and I liked it much better. To me the front feeling was more planted and a heavier feel, which I prefer.

I think you might be on to something there DC911S. As you say, I currently drive a 996 C4S and am pretty used to the handling having AWD and lower suspension.
I think I'm going to aim for a 385hbp 3.8 C4S 997.2 then...

Good choice. But I'm biased

Schneidet es in der Schweiz viel?
I would think that if you've narrowed your choices down to a CS or C4S, the capability of AWD would make the choice easy for you-or do you not drive your 911 much in the winter?

Definitely look at a 997.2 C4S PDK - fantastic cars and great looking. One thing to consider though - not sure about the market in Switzerland but here in the USA the 991 is dropping in price not much more than the 997.2 asking prices.
Talking with my Porsche tech this week (who works on everything from 997 to 935, Carrera GT's and is a race instructor) he claims the 991 is a better car in every respect. I responded back isn't the 997 a better "driver's car" he replied back to me people say that because it's cheaper and that the 997.2 is a great car at 40-45k, anything beyond that is overpriced.
I personally love the 997 but I will definitely have to open the door to the 991 at the prices they are falling to - many test drives ahead.
