964 for a 997

Really? You think I could just swap keys? Most 997s are 40K+ Don't think I could get that much for mine. Mine has 98K mls, 8/10 exterior, 9/10 interior. Had a top end and clutch replacement at 88K mls. Got it from a collector in Ventura, CA. But it has the unattractive D90s and rectangular side mirrors.

So, almost fifteen years ago, I had custody briefly, of an RSA #017 with a TPC supercharger. It was a brute, but not at all a cruiser or anything you might describe as practical. Five years ago, when 964s were as unloved as a 996, I bought an 89 964 C4 with sport seats and a 993 VRAM motor swap. Having been an Audi driver for the past 25 years, I loved the AWD. I paid 17K and in a way that was unprecedented for me, they appreciated dramatically. Long story short, it now belongs to my brother.
I bought an 06 997 S with 86K miles, Seal with full Cocoa leather. I upgraded the stereo with head unit (CarPlay, maps, Pandora, R cam) and it has been perfectly reliable, so far.
I recently visited my bro and drove the 964. It put a smile on my face immediately and throughout. That smell, the gauges, the sound of the door closing. It felt like an old pair of loafers and, although it drove and felt great, it was slow.
It was slow because i have gotten used to the 997. Of course, it does everything better. It's much faster and more comfortable. Real A/C and heat. Crazy stuff like that.
In summary, although they are clearly evolutionary, they are also entirely different experiences, so drive them both and choose your poison.

I sold my 964 in June 2015 for a 997.1 C2S because I had owned the 964 for 5 years and was looking for a change. When it comes to cars I'm not a buy and hold forever kind of guy. So far I am very happy. Would I like to be able to have both, yes, but that isn't practical for me.
I posted my impressions on this board a while back so you can search my name and find out what I think.

I wouldnt sell a 964 if I owned one now for a 997. And Ive owned 4 964's over the years. Point being why sell something that is making you money for a depreciating asset?
I almost sold my Ferrari a few years back to get another fun car. Couldnt do it and.....well......its out performed my wildest dreams. So I picked up a C4S 997 as a daily fun car. Now the 997 is creeping upward in value so a win win.
OP, the 964 and 997....no big difference is rear seat space. Both are not meant for a human past 11 years old. If you really want a 997, get a clean 2006 to scratch the itch and keep the 964.

I had a 964 for 12 years, and loved it. But, it got to the point of being a nice weekend cruise around the block, but not as livable as the new cars. I still look fondly on the air cooled, and think about getting one every now and then, but when reality hits, I tell myself I would just not use it. Having more fun with something that I drive all the time, versus a garage queen.

Just drove a beautiful 964 in Naples a few weeks ago! Loved the tightness, size and feel of that car. I just couldn't bear to trade my 911 for it! Would love to own both but I know the 964 would sit!
It was also soooo noticeably slower I doubt I could live with that either! Plus the fact that it was a coupe convinced me to pass.

If you have an air cooled to which you are really attached, keep it. Newer Porsches are a dime a dozen and I have been looking for the below since late 2004 to get her back.
I miss my last 964. I sold the below in 2004 and would pay dearly to get it back if anyone knows where it is at. I put at least $60k in mods in that car and never intended to really sell it . . . long story from 13 years ago, but I want her back.

I agree. The 964 used to be the ugly duckling or least desired. I always liked it. 3.6 litre, clutch was super easy compared to the 3.2, the act actually worked and it was easier to drive at low speeds. It also still retained the look of the earlier cars with a better stance.

I've had a 964 which was a great car then sold it for a .1 C4S sold that one as well. Fast forward a year later i regret selling them both so Picked up another 964 and picking up .2 C4S shortly.
Don't dwell too much over it. You can always get one if you regret selling.
