Default Leather type question

Sorry if this has unambiguously been asked and answered, but is the "full leather interior" (not "natural leather") a coated product or is it aniline dyed? Trying to figure out the best maintenance plan and there are lots of good products and discussions but they all start with whether it's a coated product or not.

Thanks

I have a Terracotta full leather interior ... this is painted leather. I believe the "natural" brown leather etc is aniline dyed. Unless it is "natural" leather ( a premium option ) I am pretty sure it is painted leather.

It is a dyed leather. There is a video to be found with a voice-over that talks about the construction of a 911 and talks about the leather... but in a 5 minute search I haven't been able to find it again. Gah. But I did find this video taken in the Porsche plant. You can see that both sides of the leather and can see that is is dyed since the color goes all of the way through, while painted leather would only be colored on the surface:
. I also recall from the voice-over long video them saying that the leather is a true top-grain leather.

If its not natural leather, it's painted. the natural leather is nothing to write home about btw

With the exception of some natural leathers, pretty much all automotive leather these days is coated (if not painted as well). Helps with stain resistance but unfortunately it doesn't really breathe, which is one of these reasons we buy leather in the first place.

The manufactures want to see the car, along with its interior, make it through the warranty period.

Glad to help, and good choice with Leatherique. That's what I've been using, based on the advice of other wise Rennlister's before me. If you have the perforated leather seats, this works much better than many of the others since it doesn't goop up the pores.

The standard leather is not aniline, but it really doesn't matter as Leaatherique works well on standard coated leather AND through-dyed aniline leather.

I've used it on both and won't use any other product now that I've tried Leathique.

The 2009 order guide shows three price points and, well, you know, you get what you pay for.

$3,655 will get you full leather in black, stone grey, sea blue or sand beige
$4,085 will get you special leather in terracotta or cocoa
$5,165 will get you natural leather in dark grey, natural brown or carrera red

Thanx for the vid..... interesting they use Juki machines... Japanese... I think that is the first non-German piece of equipment (including gloves) I have seen in these Porsche vids.

Peace

Follow-up post. I bought the Leatherique two part system and did the drivers seat as a test. In the past I've used lexol, griots, McGuires and saddle soap. The Leatherique is more work but worth the effort. My seats were in good condition so I can't say that they look cleaner and there was virtually no dirt or discoloration that came off in process. But they have a beautiful uniform matte finish that looks new or better than new.

Call me a convert. I'm discarding all the old products.
