Default Appearance of 911

Is the appearance of a 911 getting long in tooth? A new 911 still has the basic shape of the first 911 from 50 years ago. Most non Porsche people cannot tell the difference from a new 911 from a 20 year old model. How much longer can they keep the 911 shape relevant?

why change perfection and beauty drastically just for the sake of change? GO compare a porsche 20 years old to a 20 year old Toyota or even Merc or BMW and tell me whos doing it right? Would you rather drive a new transformer looking Lexus?

Porsche, whether by design or circumstance, have created a THE automotive icon.

They would be fools to ever let it die. It's just as relevant now as it's ever been, maybe more so.

Yes exactly - it's probably the greatest automotive icon in history.

Funny question, but perhaps not entirely unfair...

But yeah... there is a reason its basic, elementary shape has not changed, and never should.

What's wrong with that? Why would one want a 911 that doesn't look like a 911?

A few years ago (around 2008), parked at a gas station, some guy asked me if that was the new 911. I answered: well, it was brand new back in 1978, now it is just new :-)

I miss my 930

Someone posted a meme last year that was an animated evolution of the silhouette of the Ford Mustang. I suggested they make one for the 911 and just post the one shape.

If you sold that car you really need some psychological counseling!

Replace "911" with "pickup truck" and you'll see that form follows function. It's also why all mid-engined supercars share the same basic shape as well. Same for any body style really (mini vans, hatch backs, sedans, etc).

Aside from design details in bumpers and lights, there really isn't much that can change from generation to generation. The overall shape will be basically the same as long as there is an engine in the back, seats in the rear, and not much up front.

When everything is electric standard car shapes will start to change. It's happening already.

911 like fine wine...as it gets older the better it is.

911 shape is iconic and cannot be messed with. It's like the baby v8 Ferrari..
F355 f360 f430 458 and 488 are all very similar

The shape is incredible and I agree, nothing else that isn't rear engined can look like it. At least anything with an ICE.

The shape also helps the value stay strong on the older models. When people think your 10 year old or 20 year old porsche is new or almost new, it definitely makes it more valuable on the free market.

Rolex and Harley's would be other examples but not for my tastes.
