why wouldn't you ask the dealer what happens if you just don't want to proceed with the sale for any reason?

Beyond your state's statutes (It might be a pain to go to court over $500), wouldn't the dealer be the best person to consult with regarding the stipulations of the "refundable" deposit?

Did the same earlier this year on a 997.1 S with a Indy dealer. Had a WRITTEN claus that I could back out of the deal and get a full refund if inspection by a mechanic of my choosing revealed anything that was not originally disclosed and which made me no longer consider the vehicle fit for purchase based on those findings.

ALWAYS get it in writing.

Pretty normal. It's just a disincentive for people to jerk dealers around. I know we all love to hate on "stealers" but it is business after all. If they tell you it's refundable in writing (including an email, because at $500 it is low enough not to require a formal "writing" in most jurisdictions), and they are otherwise a reputable dealer, I wouldn't sweat it. Look at the big picture too. Unless you're one of these guys who enjoys the "thrill of the hunt" of finding your 911 more than, you know, *actually getting one*, if this is the car you want and you are about to spend $40 - $50 -$60K for it, I wouldn't think risking $500 is the end of the world.

Good luck with your car!
