New 997 Owner - Texas
Hey guys and gals - I'm new to this forum and just picked up a 2007 3.6 manual. I have been looking for quite some time and lurking here. Wanted to say thank you for the advice everyone here posts. I especially appreciate the technical backgrounds so many of you have as well as your healthy skepticism and policing of this forum. There's a lot of common sense and practical advice being passed around and that's rare today.
This is my first P-car and I know I have a lot to learn. I've been all over the map previously from mustang to WRX to miata to mini - and recently a 2011 elise SC, as well as a 1987 alfa spider I fixed up and sold along with the elise last year.
Needless to say then I am beyond pleased with this car. First impressions are that it is enormously stable - so much more so than my previous sports cars (admittedly I'm into the lightweight type), it just feels substantial and grown up.
The 3.6 is more power than I've had in a car before and sounds great.
I crossed shopped older but well kept 996's - for the price (mid/high 20's) v. mid high 30's for a nice 997, I felt like the 997 was a clear winner. Also very much liked the 991, but the size and interior as well as the sound and feel of the 997 relay sold me. Would have moved for a 997.2 - maybe I will one day, but was a little more than I wanted to spend for a clean example.
I have a big time man crush on the lobster claws, that was honestly a leader in my search.... They are so funky..
Other than that this is a base Carrera, and did my best to try to find a sweet spot between the most Porsche I could afford and responsibility.
29,000 miles and very clean on the inside. No real issues other than a front right parking light that is intermittently out. I removed the light already but no H8 bulbs in my neighborhood (yes auto zone and O'reilly were out) , so it's on order.
Got a reasonable deal, and completed months of searching...
Any advice for this newbie? Happy to join the family.

Congrats sir!! I just made the move on the exact same car (2007 base Carrera) and I couldn't be more happy with her. She came with a ton of tasteful upgrades, that was well worth the value in not going with the "S" model. But to each his own. This car is more than capable with its power and driving experience. Enjoy her in good health. I hope you got a good PPI done. If not, I highly suggest you take her in for a full inspection. Biggest things to worry about on these cars is Bore Scoring in the cylinders, and the DME scan to make sure the car has not been over rev'd and abused. Other than that... Check the RMS seal for any potential leaks. IMS can be checked too, but is pretty much a non-issue in this model year.
Other than that... As big Tom C Mets would say... "Drive it like you stole it!"
Cheers!

Congrats
Congratulations and enjoy! That looks like Park Place in your pics? That's where I bought my '09 2S late last year. My only regret is not waiting until I found exactly what I was looking for - manual vs. PDK and color choice.
Drive the crap out of it ... don't let it sit in your garage.

You in the DFW area? (given you got the car at park place, I assume so) Great group of people there.
If you're in north texas, be sure to join the PCA Mavericks Chapter. It's a very active chapter of the PCA and full of great people.

^^^^What big Ricky said...
I highly recommend you invest in a clear car wrap to protect the beautiful black paint. I just recently found out that after 6 weeks of ownership, the prior owner of my 911 had almost the entire car clear wrapped... SCORE!!!!

Thanks guys, I'm actually in Houston. I drove it back from Dallas.
Yes, I'm going to get it looked at and see if there's anything that needs to be buttoned up and do the gundo hack. 2 owners, sold originally at park place, then porsche plano, then to me at park place again.
I'm handy as respects brakes, oil change, gear oil and other basic's / consumables - but looks to be in good shape to me.
So different than a lotus. I think my Elise would have failed a PPI new from the dealer. Had an oil leak as delivered (this was 2011) and was missing its roof spars among other things. I believe the elise hardened my stress level and risk tolerance - not to mention the '87 Alfa.
That said - Porsche builds a great car.
I plan to join the club here and will either be taking the car to Sphere here in the heights - I used to store my cars at Alara, or modern air cooled - they seem like a neat shop.
Also will be back into PDX and Drivers Edge I hope.
Got the seat memory all set up and figured out how the lights work. Cool you can pull out the switch for fog..

Black over tan. Yummy. Just like a Guinness - refreshing and satisfying.
Advice? Hmm. Start thinking of a good cover story for when friends and family keep asking why you've got a perma-grin plastered on your puss!
Make a list of your favorite stores to shop, but not next door, three counties over! And, plot out the twistiest routes to each.
Welcome to the club. Always great to see another Porsche in the Lone Star State. Enjoy in the best of health!

Read the manual, drive and enjoy. Search the forum here for the formula for tan touch up paint. Print it out and take to Home Depot. Its dead on perfect. If you have any scrapes on the interior plastic parts, you can fix it in five minutes and $5.

If you get involved with the club down there say hi to Texas Ryder. He is active in Houston club,,has a '16 Cayman S, also black. Good move getting a Texas car by the way.
I was looking for a base Carrera myself, but a S that was too good to pass came along.
