I drove a V8 R8 for almost 2 yrs. Great handling, the AWD was really my first....but it was useless as a DD for lack of storage.

Replaced it with an RS5. I really liked the sleeper aspect of it...

I'm currently in a 997.1 C2S....I didn't want to jump all in, but can see upgrading this in the near future....priced well enough to DD all day every day.

Nice list of cars. That's RAC Performance's Warehouse in the fifth photo. What part of Texas are you at?

I'm also thinking about getting an R8, think it looks cool, it's a lot more rare than a 997. You can get back into a 997 anytime, they don't cost much these days. A manual R8 sounds like a great idea. I'm most likely getting a house before another car. Need more garage spaces. But once I get the house, I'm probably going to start looking for an R8.

My 911 works as a daily driver because my kid fits in the back and his hockey bag fits on the front seat.

I love looking at My 911. R8 looks nice too.

If I had no kids the R8 would be on my list !

But I do ....

This will not be for the track - mainly a daily driver, dates with the wife and something I can stare at in the garage with my morning coffee. I love the lines of the R8 as much as I love the lines of the 997. I have the new Shelby GT350 for track use so track ability is less of a factor.

Thoughts or experience?
I'm thinking on a wholly different plane here. IIRC, you like to work on your cars and seem to derive a great deal of pleasure from it. If this is true, maybe part of the equation is if/how much of the maintenance can you do on the R8 - and how much would it bother you if you had to bring it to Audi for an oil change.

I'm just north of Ft Worth. RAC is a good drive from here but it was a great purchasing experience, one of the best I've had in over 30 yrs.

I never had any repair concerns on the R8, outside of normal maintenance. Any Audi dealer can handle it. Other than storage, it was a pretty remarkable car.

R8. Had a 2012 V10 6-speed. Fabulous machine. I traded it on a GT3 as I wanted something more visceral but as a DD the R8 can't be beat.

Audi make great daily cars. But I prefer the much more analog feeling that my 911 provides. The TTRS I have is significantly faster.. but the 911 feels very organic compared to the "boosted" and "digitized" feeling the RS provides. Also I will not ever own another manual gearbox Audi as my TTRS gearbox is by far the worst manual gearbox of any car I have ever driven. Really Stronic is probably the only way I'd go on an R8.. I believe its 2013+.

DSG/Stronic works rather well and impressively.

edit; I'd have a 997 GTS over an R8.. made that choice recently

I don't believe there was a 2013 in North America. 2014 and 2015 have the Stronic.

Fair enough. So the fact still remains you'd end up driving a car model year 2013 or later in order to have an Stronic R8.

But feel free to continue splitting hairs..

Respectfully, just trying to be specific.

I chose a 997.2 GTS over a V8 MT R8. I liked the gated shifter but the steering was so numb. You'll get stares and ppl wanting to talk about the R8. I'd def consider a V10 but the V8 sounded so pedestrian... It's much less practical than a 911 but damned exotic looking. Very cool date night C&C car.

Owning a 2015 R8 V8/manual as well as a very low mileage 997.2 Carrera S/manual, I can certainly comment on these two vehicles.
IMO, driving the R8 is an "event". The 997 is a great driver and much better suited for daily
use. The Carrera feels much lighter and requires less work to drive well. The R8 certainly attracts more attention.

Summed up perfectly!
