I wonder when you'd chime in!

Hoping that yours being a 997.1 it won't apply to my 997.2

ha ha ya couldn't resist

the 997.1 probs are well documented. The .2's arent as susceptible but I have also heard from Jake that they do happen

I thought this was not the case for the 997.2 if you have a stock exhaust setup - the center muffler cutaways I've seen show the pipes doing a 180 internally and sending the exhaust back out the same side. If you have a center muffler bypass where the tubes crossover, then the exhaust gases would swap sides. It looks like the 997.1 is what you're talking about - the exhaust pipes cross over in the back.

Didn't know this- well, I guess it rules out any issue with cyl 6 being the cause of the soot difference between the two!

Fwiw, the board survey on bore scoring shows no incidents of problem w the .2 cars. 0 % incidence 2009-2012. There may be other issues for top end damage to .2s. maybe maintainance/lubrication related. At any rate I hold out hope for OP's car. Any wagers out there to the contrary?

Been through the soot paranoia and oil consumption paranoia in the 8000 miles since purchase of my CPO 997.2 in Feb. Cleaned the soot of the pipes many times - not as much as OP.

This is what I have learned. Sometimes R side in 1000 miles dirtier, sometimes L side dirtier, sometimes burn a quart of oil in 1000 miles, and have gone 3000 miles with change in the oil level.

Solution? Make my kids clean the tail pipes

40 people responded to the poll. That means absolutely nothing.

9A1 (997.2 DFI engine) info and internal pics from Raby

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...ability-7.html

Go on any message board and you'll learn the weakness of any high performance engine, and it'll seem like that oil starvation in #5 is going to happen to you... that scoring on the right bank is going to happen to you... that piston slap on the ''turbo whatever engine'' is coming to get you.

When message boards first came to be, it was the 1990's and every car I had was a ticking time bomb since then.

Boats? Even worse! Because of the neglect they go through, the failure rate is 'high'... so buy a high-performance boat and it'll rot, suck in water and hydrolock. And if it doesn't, and you live in the south, a cold night will crack the block. It's a wonder there are any boats on the water.

Well, this gave me some stuff to think about (I almost wish I hadn't brought it up )

So my takeaways are, um, I don't know other than not to worry too much about it. Keep an eye on oil consumption. I have a two year CPO so I'll drive it as much as possible and involve a dealer if something seems to be going sideways with my engine. Maybe if I hang with this forum for a few years I'll update this thread occasionally.

Not happy about Raby's post- my car is very low mileage, was used in Indiana, was used in the winter- so that adds up to his model of an engine prone to problems... but I don't think it's the kiss of doom, necessarily, given the good overall reputation for the 9A1

Thanks all!
