Pulled the trans last night to install what I thought was a bad clutch and the flywheel just fell out. Car gets driven hard but never any clutch dumps or abuse. This happened in a parking lot going in reverse. Anyone ever seen a dual mass flywheel sheer in half? New clutch, Aasco flywheel and LSD going in this week.

 

Wow, that's quite a failure! How many miles on this piece, and any knowledge of how it was previously driven? My guess is that this is quite rare. Sounds like you've got a nice setup going in :-)

 

Sadly, these things are not as tough as they once were. I had a pressure plate fail on me with no clutch abuse at all. I commonly go over 100,000 on a Porsche clutch, but not on the 997.

 

Any symptoms you noticed before you opened it up?

 

DM flywheel was original with 120k miles. Took a spirited drive to work and when I went to reverse out of the parking lot it let go. Sounded like a metallic crackling noise when clutch pedal was released and the car obviously didn't move.

 

Which lsd you installing?
