Slow engine turn over
You can check the voltage drop across the cable, and then decide if the cable is bad or its the starter. A good shop will do just that. But do it when its hot. Mine was fine when cold, when hot....nope. Power is volts x current.....When the voltage drops, and you need the same amount of power, then current draw goes up!
So does this same issue occur with the 997.2?
Over the last two weeks my car would start fine at home but the when I went to start it when the car was warm it has gotten slower and slower until yesterday where it wouldn't turn over at all and I had to get towed.
It seemed to me that the battery was not charging and maybe that there was a problem with the alternator but may be it is actually the starter.
Thoughts?

When it's the heat soaked starter, the car will still start just turn over very slowly. It never killed my battery but I didn't ever do more than 2-3 starts while heat soaked and out and about before the car sat long enough to cool off (about 15-20 minutes) and start up w/o a problem.
It sounds like you may have the heat soak issue but you eventually killed the battery and/or an alternator problem like you said.
