Bits of foam coming out of HVAC vebts
2005 997.1
Little bits of black foam coming out of the HVAC vents top and middle. Not sure about the footwell ones. Sizes vary from small to about 1/4" square.
Anybody else?
I'm guessing this is deterioration of some conduit/duct lining and it will wear itself out eventually. Don't really like it when it blows this crap all over my shirt.
Car is not garaged and it can be quite hot here in the south. First owner was in Tampa, FL.
TIA

Yes, disintegrating foam. Foam is a terrible material but all car makers use it. It survives the warranty period but disintegrates afterwards.

Except that... the insulation the foam was providing is gone and rattling increases due to lack of cushioning foam between moving plastic flaps in the AC/Vent piping. A better material like stable soft rubber would be better.

Thanks. At least its not just me, or serious, or long lived.
I was thinking what this would look like as you are trying to sell your car. The potential buyer turns on the HVAC and gets covered in crappy foam confetti. Ha Ha Ha Ughmmn.

Mine has been doing it for last 2 years, I only drive it 1K per year but it seems like never ending, also when this foam flies out, it stains the carpet since it comes out very sticky, 8(

The blend doors are not solid plastic doors. They have large holes in them and foam on both sides.
bad blend doors
Here's the new one
To do a complete fix, the dash needs to come out.
When the foam on the edges are gone. It'll rattle.

So how will this affect the HVAC?
More or less heat?
More or less AC?
Less directional control? Footwell - windscreen?

Practically, the only change you may notice is that the fan speed won't change much in auto setting.

Same problem and it happened in my 993 as well. If it makes anyone feel better it happened in my Toyota Tundra and my Lexus GX470. Porsche is not alone in this one.
