Default Manual or PDK?

Looking to upgrade my manual 997.1 C4S to a 997.2 Turbo. Which tranny should I get? I know the PDK is a faster option but does it change the enjoyment of "driving" a manual? Seems to be a glorified automatic.

Depends. If using it as a daily driver, I'd get PDK and leave it in auto mode for stop and go traffic. Regardless, if you get PDK, I would get the upgraded steering wheel with the paddles rather than the buttons...T

Agree, 3 pedals is the way to go. If you plan to keep the car I believe manual will be more desirable in the market down the road.

Also the feel of driving a manual and rowing the gears can not be replaced.

Nothing like the lost art of rowing your own gears. To me it makes me feel like I'm one with the car and I really don't care if manual shift is slower from 0- 60 than PDK. However, as tomc_mets said, I'd probably prefer PDK if I had to sit in rush hour traffic every day.

I prefer manual. The 997.2 manual is the last 911 turbo available with a manual transmission. Many of them were ordered from the factory with PDK, so manuals aren't very common. Good luck with your search.

I sold my manual '07 targa 4S and bought a '12 GTS cab with PDK. Here's my $.02 - PDK has some advantages in stop & go traffic, the shifts are amazingly quick and almost always in the right gear. Launch control is fun too. Get the paddles because the buttons suck. BUT.......

I miss shifting and without looking at the gear number on the dash, I usually am not 100% sure what gear is engaged and I feel somewhat disconnected from the car, especially when I want to go for a late night cruise. PDK makes my driving a bit lazy and in manual mode it is just not the same. I'm not bagging on PDK because it does have some advantages, but I'd rather have a manual. My wife even says the manual is more fun to drive.

I'm planning on selling the PDK this year and getting a manual.

It's a personal choice. There is absolutely not a better one out of the two. Also depends on how you want to use the car. I went with PDK on my recently purchased GTS. My other car, which is faster.. is a 6 speed. I enjoyed the 6 speed more than I do now when I lived in a different city. Nothing changed about my driving habits besides the city, but having the 6 speed in St. Louis was a different experience than having it in Charlotte. Charlotte traffic is needlessly heavy at nearly all times of day and I don't care to be rowing gears in that kinda traffic.. not every single day of the week. My cars are daily use. If I had bought my car as a weekend car then I might've gone with a manual. But I don't miss "rowing my own". The PDK is very engaging since I drive it strictly in manual mode (besides traffic jams).

I have a PDK and I love driving at 10/10 I can extract all the performance from my car consistently and safely without risk of cooking the clutch or over revving the engine.

However when not driving at 10/10 I really miss the manual and will likely trade in for manual down the line. Most of my driving ranges from 4/10 to 8/10 and manual is better in these situations.

Personal choice. No one can make that for you.

If I had more feeling in my left leg I'd still have three pedals. Since I broke my left ankle a couple weeks ago I'm glad I've got only two.

I love the technology and the choice the PDK offers. Take off from a stop isn't as smooth as a manual, but I understand why so that doesn't bother me.

In traffic I put it in auto and relax.

On the twisties I put it in manual and am almost as fully engaged as a manual would allow me to be. Almost ...

I have the buttons and I like them. They are right where I want them. A can shift up or down with either hand. I have never hit them accidentally. I move my hands less on a shift in the middle of a turn. Yes, the PDK is so smooth that a downshift in the middle of a turn is essentially seamless.

The PDK is a learned technique. As with driving in general ... practice practice practice!

The choice is yours. Don't let others persuade you.

Good luck with the search.

100 percent true. And PDK is NOT glorified automatic. Can't compare. It's 100 times faster shifts and feels different especially in sport mode
