Default Coolant Temperature Sensor malfunction

While driving my 997.2 yesterday, the car was fully warmed up and I was about a mile from home and the coolant temp gauge on the dash went to zero and a warning light came on. The oil temp stayed just below 200 as I drove home. The coolant gauge turned back on, then off two more times before I got home, strange.

I checked the coolant level and everything looked ok. I then pulled out my durametric and got the message 1901 "coolant temperature sensor, loose contact implausible signal".

I drove the car again this morning and stayed close to home, after about 5 mi the gauge stopped working again for about a minute then came back on. I'm pretty sure I'm only dealing with a loose or malfunctioning coolant sensor.

I've searched a lot on here and Google and can't seem to find where the sensor is located. Does anyone know where the sensor is located? Thanks!

Thanks, but just to be clear, do you know if that is the coolant temperature sensor and not the coolant level sensor?

I ask because I found a few posts in my search that said the coolant level sensor was in a similar location.

Great, thanks.

When it says right side of the car, is that the passenger side? Based on the pic, it looks close to where the exhaust comes off the engine on that side, am I looking at that right?

About to go look around, thanks.

Thanks again MkC2S, you pointed me in the right direction. The pic you posted above appears to be a 996 but it is in nearly the same place on a 997.2. The easiest access is by removing the airbox and looking just off to the right and down, you can see the same copper/gold nut and plug/wire.

I made sure it wasn't loose or anything and went for a quick drive, after a few miles the coolant gauge went to zero again. I parked the car and have a new part on order.

For those who have this issue in the future...

As I said above, the sensor is fairly easy to spot and touch after removing the airbox but I just couldn't get the necessary tools in where they needed to be to do it myself. And not being a pro, I didnt want to start removing other things. My indy replaced it for 2 hrs labor. All is well.
