The two back seats make it much more practical for road trips. We've been on the long trips. And, the wife insisted that if I was getting a mid life crisis car, it had to be a 911. I don't argue with my wife when she's talking like that!

I love the backseats as a deciding factor. Seriously? They are the very definition of vestigial. Yes my kids spent some time in those back seats but not after they were 5 feet tall and even at that point I was pushing my luck. About 7 years back I drove my first Cayman S. To me it was a revelation. I hopped out of the car and said to the salesman "this is my next car!". Then the doom hammer hit and I had to put Porsche driving days on hold for 7 years. I sold off my 911, tightened my belt and rebuilt my capital. When it was time to get back into the Porsche brand I initially started thinking Cayman S. I have a 335xi family hauler, bad weather car. I only needed two seats. Besides, the handling of a Cayman is just plane better than a 911. Sorry, facts are facts. It is the most balanced car I had ever driven. True , it didn't have as much grunt as a 911, but frankly if I was obsessed with grunt I would go back to Mustang or Corvette . In terms of looks, I feel the Cayman is a better looking car than the 911 . Though to be honest both are really great looking cars. I just like the tighter low slung look of the Cayman more. I've always had a predilection for smaller cars ( which is odd given I'm 6'3" 205 pounds) and I viewed the Cayman as trying to hold the line on the ever bloated modern car. (remember when we didn't think of 911's as GTs?) Also, I guess having had a 911 already I got that 'gotta have a 911' feeling out of my system. Then my thinking took one more turn, I decided I had to have a convertible. I like boxsters but to be frank they didn't capture my imagination , visually, like a Cayman did. But then I saw/ and drove the Spyder. Decision made, handling, looks, sounds, smells, the car checked all the boxes. Plus I wanted to support that "we're gonna make it leaner in order to be faster" mentality behind the Spyder. Anyways long post , sorry. Hope this gives you some new ways at looking at the choices you have.

I went to the dealer to get a Cayman. I was set on it. Felt it was the perfect car for me. Took wife on a test drive with me and she hated the Cayman!!

Pushed me to drive the 911. Picked the 4S to drive and I was sold the moment I got into it!

I owe my choice to my wife! If she didn't push me to get into the 911, I would have gotten the Cayman!!

^ Back seats may not be great for anything other than small dogs & small children, but for road trips they allow the wife to pack two extra suitcases! The vestigial backseat also allows more recline to the seats than in the wife's SLK roadster, another plus on road trips if you have a 50-something year old cranky back.

The back seats may be cramped, impractical and yes, vestigial. But, they are seats, and that's more than you get in a Boxter.

With three kids, having those tiny seats often allows me to drive my 911 instead of our SUV. When I had my S2000, if more than two of us needed to go somewhere, the sports car sat at home.

They don't make a roof rack for the 981 and I never warmed up to the looks of the 987.

1) The iconic Porsche. Was always told that any car guy should own a 911 at least once in their life. Finally, I decided now should be that time.

2) Back seats. I've got kids, and they all fit fine in the back. Granted, I'm a short guy, so that helps. Having 4 seats made the difference between a daily driver and an occasional use car. Even adults are OK in the back for short trips. And, since I have a Targa, the rear hatchback makes the car even more practical as a daily driver.

It's really the perfect car for me in many ways.

I wanted AWD. Plus, I've always wanted a 911, so this purchase was checking off a bucket list item. I can see me getting a Boxster as a second car sometime in the future though.

Some of us bought a Cayman because it's NOT a 911.

I absolutely love 911s, and will have a GT3 someday.

But... when buying my 1st Porsche, I decided to be a bit different and buy the "sleeper" Cayman R. The rarity was a big factor, but the purpose of the car (light, low, raw) were factors as well.

Plus, buying a "regular" 911 at the same price point as the R wasn't pushing my buttons.

I like being a bit different, and sometimes, it seems that everyone and their mother has a 911. Not true, I know.

Plus.... MID-ENGINE!
