Would really like to see the invoice before passing judgment. It might just be me but I've gotten the sense that the OP was not real clear on what work was done and was not up to speed on the IMS bearing issue as others were. This is probably a misunderstanding rather than fraud.

 

Let me be clear so there is no misunderstanding:

- I asked for the IMS
- was sold an $800 IMS
- was told I got the IMS installed
- and was provided receipts for the IMS

 

But why would you think that the bearing could be removed and installed without any labor? It's not like replacing a gas cap. You need a special tool to extract it and even though the transmission was out which would save some labor there should have been a couple of hours to do this procedure. Not sure if this story is fact or fiction.

 

Some shops do it with no added labor charge if you are already paying for a clutch labor and parts. So easy to be confused there.
He got ripped, no question.

 

He was already replacing the rear main seal and offered to do the IMS while he was in there.

EDIT for clarification: I already paid for parts & labor to do the rear main seal. While he was in there, he said he could do the IMS for just the cost of the part.

Many thanks to Semicycler for post #29. I made a copy and have saved that brilliant description of the whole IMS saga. Now when I'm shopping for a car I can do it with confidence if I know the engine serial number.

 

Kind of, if you do more research there also situations where the serial number situation isn't 100% accurate. In other words there are serial numbers here to be involved with the small IMS bearing that aren't in there and cases of higher serial numbers that do you have a small IMS. So that graphic works most of the time but not 100% of the time

Did the price go up on the IMS ceramic bearing from LN Engineering? Because in 2012 when I did mine for a 2005 997S - it was in the 600 dollar range....

 

Yes they are $800 now

 

OP did you say how much you paid total? I ask because I had an LN Engineering recommended installer at Daytona Beach do my clutch and IMS on a 2005 997S launch edition for $1,700

 

I can't remember exactly but paid almost that +- $100 in Orlando 3 years ago
