997 GTS - GT4 Comparison
Thought this might be an interesting topic assuming it hasn't been addressed already. Both have similar physical dimensions. One has four seats and the other two. The 997 GTS weighs more, 3,400 lbs/408 hp. with zero to 60 at 4.2 sec. The GT4 weighs less, 3,050 lbs./385 hp. with zero to 60 at 4.2 sec. Both engines are 3.8 but one has the X51 package. Of course the GT4 has the GT3 suspension allowing for more adjustability in handling on the track. The GT4 is in great demand with significant dealer markups and limited allocations. If you're really lucky, a dealer might let you sit in one, if they had one! The GT3 forum is ablaze with GT4 reviews regarding lack of power and understeer (as comparing with GT3, I suppose). Both are good as a daily driver and track car, so I am told. Since a GT3 is out of your price range, would you consider a GT4?

I think I would save up for the GT3 if I was looking for that type of a car. It's hard to say for sure though without having driven a GT4. I've driven the new 991 GT3 on the track, and it's fantastic.

For price they are selling cayman GT4's for.....
I rather have this
I get the GT3 rear steering (on the 4 and S models as option) - PASM - PDK II - More torque - Better fuel economy- New PCM - better tail lights - new 918 steering wheel - new "active Aero"
But I'm "not afraid of technology".
The 991.1 GTS is significantly more than both the Cayman GT4 and the new "911".
My question to myself would be why would I buy a 991.2 S over a Base 4 now that they have the same engine with just a differn't "tune".
just my .02 cents
BTW both would most likely be really close on the track unless your a Pro driver.
Rear steering works.. I've seen a GT3 off line still traveling at stupid speeds in the corners at PIR

I have a GT4 coming in April...didn't even think about purchasing a non-GT 991, completely different cars. Thought about 997.2 GT3's, but I want something with a full factory warranty at this point in my life....and if I go 997.2 GT3, I want to go RS...and those are overpriced right now IMO. 991 GT3 was out because no manual was offered.
Drove a friend's GT4 last month and fell in love...admittedly haven't driven a GT3 yet though.
EDIT: Paying MSRP for mine...have had a deposit down since last December.

100% agree. I knew my dealer wasn't going to charge me over MSRP based on our relationship/they're a stand-up group, but I was planning on walking away if they did and getting something different.
Fantastic car, but not worth a mark-up IMO.

997.2 GTS coupe weights are actually: 3,131/3,197 lbs (manual/PDK).
I'd rather have my GTS because to me the 911 = Porsche. I've been obsessing over them since I was five. I also don't need a track car, as I'm not a track rat. I need/want a street car. My GTS is the perfect car for my wants and needs. GT4 is a great car, I'm sure, but it's still a Cayman. Not putting the Caymans down. I like them a lot. But I wouldn't have one over a nice 911.

I believe those are EU weights which assume a no option car which means rear seat delete and no sunroof. In North America, all Carreras came with a sunroof and I don't think the rear seat delete was even an option. Most GTS's end up weighing around 3200-3400 depending on options. I've corner weighed my 6MT GTS and its well over 3200lbs with full fluids and it's not crazy on the options.
I don't think the GT4 and GTS are really comparable unless you're talking about a GTS that is track prepped, in which case it just boils down to whether you like driving a RR platform or a MR platform, given power/weight is similar. Also, the gearing on the GT4 is kind of weird... 83mph in 2nd?

This was a dilemma for me actually and it boiled down to one thing. Rear seats. I'm having kid(s) so I need rear seats in my car. I also like to take my car on longer trips so the added storage was crucial.
At similar price points (a year ago) the GT4 looked like a bargain track car with a warranty and full suspension adjustability. It cost me a few grand to add the adjustable suspension parts to my GTS.
It's also unfortunate that the GT3 is basically a 2 seater as well. You could take the cage out, weld mounts for the seats and install seats but that defeats the purpose IMO and my unicorn if there's a GT3 for sale out there one day like that.
That's besides the different engine layout MR vs RR. Not to mention the more subjective things like 911 name, driving characteristics of each car, etc..
I mean, you did post this in the 997 section so your replies will lean toward the 997 GTS a bit.

I was looking for a 987.2 before I found my 997.1 and test drove a few of them. I really liked the feel of an MR platform.
I would still take a GT4 over a GTS. For my purposes, anyway. I'd probably remove the rear wing for daily duty and install a subtle ducktail in it's place.
It's surprising to me that a base 997.1 weighs less than a hundred pounds more than a 987.1 Cayman S, which is why I didn't mind "shopping up" to a 997.1.
