Default PPI in Laguna Ca.?

Im looking at a 08 manual with 47k, and the owner has a broken foot. So I need to have to have it flat beded. I tried the local P dealers and they all turned me down. One said they stopped doing PPI's about 4 months ago due to liability.

Cape Porsche? Vision? Laguna Motor Wurks?

Main things I want checked:

Frame damage, over revs and whatever the DME spits out? Compression check?

I've used Hergesheimer but have received very positive feedback on Vision and they would likely be closer to where the car is. DME/over-revs is very basic as well as paint thickness check and frame eval. However, doing a leak down gets you into much more expensive PPI territory...$500+. Compression check is usually not as involved but I don't really know.

Assuming you don't live nearby because it seems unusual that you couldn't drive to the shop with the owner and then have someone pick you up from there.

Jack's German car repair in Fountain Valley. He does a few of my cars. Real good guy.
Maybe call him, ask for Jack. See what you think of him, Make sure he does PPI, I believe he does.

Thanks guys. Yea, I live in the LA area and the car is in Laguna. Seller got the car in a divorce, has a broken foot and wants to sell it. Its kind of under the radar as its not really being advertised, but checks off every box that Im looking for. The seller cant drive the car to a shop to do a PPI so its a little difficult working out the logistics.

Vision Motorsports no longer does PPIs. You might be able to get one there if you were local and they were getting future business out of the deal. But as of right now, no.

Looks like Cape will be getting the business.

Thanks, Ill report back on how everything went and hopefully some pics of my the new toy.

I'd be happy to check out the car for you in person if you want an opinion regarding cosmetics.

No problem, good luck.
I would be happy to go see it for a visual. I just don't know enough to help you out.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Its booked for a 9am PPI. Road test, interior switches/function check, up on the rack for frame and leaks, compression check, DME check for over revs/codes and a paint thickness check.

I can do the road test, push buttons and look for paint work, but I cant talk to the computer and I left my car lift in my other pants. The money I spent is well worth the peace of mind and a day of back and forth driving.

What did the other Porsche dealers state as their reason for turning you down?

Cheers,
Roland

Didnt get a straight answer. But I figure it ties up a rack and a tech for a couple of hours with little to no chance of 'upping' bill. A PPI customer pays $250-500 and they are gone.

Customer A walks into the dealer with a problem....they can charge a diagnosis fee, then parts and labor to fix it. The last scenario is a far more profitable bet.

Vision said its not worth their time because you will not be back for return service. IE, you are tying up their racks and techs for a few bucks.

When I was buying in the LA area back in March I was turned down for PPI from every shop I called. The reason was there had been a couple significant lawsuits brought on by people whose used 996/997s experienced an IMS failure after a clean PPI.

Since shops can't really conclude that a car will not have some significant issue in the future, they decided it wasn't worth the risk to offer PPIs. So now no shops in the SoCal area perform a traditional PPI.

What they will do instead is perform individual tests that you specifically request and they agree upon in advance.

I got a verbal report over the phone while the formal PPI is being typed up and scanned.

Mechanically its perfect with the exception of needing tires and front brakes. No codes and revs were in range 1 and 2. 1 curbed wheel and a 3/4 inch tear in the drivers rear seat back. Original paint with a small nick in the rear bumper.

He said it looked like it has been sitting for a while (cobwebs) which checks out with the sellers story of getting it in a divorce and not driving it.

I couldnt find a White Tan Manual in the US that wasnt beat up or in the 50's (and across the country).

Im getting it.

Congrats and be sure to post pics.. and get those clear side markers on order now while you wait

On a related note: I wonder what effect, if any, this new situation with PPI difficulty will have on all of us moving forward.
