Default service question for a newbie with a 2011

I have a 2011 GTS, I purchased in february. I had the service records and approx 1 year ago (oct 2014) it had a service at 29,000 miles.

I have only driven the car 1500 miles (yes, it is a weekend driver), and haven't had any problems.

A few days ago, the service light came on, and says I need service in 15 days or in 8500 miles.

I assume the light came on because the last service was in october of last year.

How do i know WHICH service is due - it had the 30k, but would the car know that, and what if the dealer says it needs the 30k, not the 40k?

I have the same car, I bought in January '15 with 8,800 miles on the meter. Have service print out as work was always done at the dealer. 20k service done 2/2013 @4,900 miles! Three year service, 2/2014 @ 7,776 miles! Postcard in the mail advising next service…… This is over the top but possibly done to honor warranty, I suppose. Not familiar with service details but, if not done, brake/clutch fluid flush would be in order. Service intervals are based on time or mileage, which ever occurs first, thus the info light on the dash. Dealer/shop can reset the "reminder meter" and, if out of warranty, one does not need to follow the "rules" so to speak. If you track the car or do "short run" driving, a yearly oil change may be in order. Other than that, visual inspections by a qualified technician should catch any upcoming issues. Remember that Porsches are meant to be driven, not looked at…….

I do not know what 'rules' you speak of but DIY or indie shop performing regular maintenance will not void any warranty.

And correct, sambb. Search the forum for convo on services. Intervals are either time or mileage based, whichever occurs first.

sambb, one way to find out which service was done is to look up the CarFax history. If you need help, post the VIN and I can do that for you.

Or, if you know where the car was previously serviced at, call that dealership and they could even tell you what was done, replaced, etc.

As a minimum you need an oil/filter change and brake fluid change (done every 2 years).

next major service would be at 40k - plugs, oil and filter, and a few other things I can't remember. Next service for you would likely be only oil and filter and brake fluid

they set the light to go off in 1 yr. it would be for oil change, minor service and check. The only reason you should do anything to it is if its under warrantee. if so it has to have regular services so not to void warrantee. call your service dealer and ask if they are going to require you to do anything
