update: warranty company ::surprise surprise:: declined coverage saying it is a wear and tear item. When pushed further, they said they can not make a final decision until the cause of the scoring is known. If it was caused by a covered part i.e. cracked piston ring, then all will be covered. If found to be dirt that got lodged in, or some other unknown cause, then the cost of the disassembly of the engine is on me and I am back at square one. Dealer is offering to get it back in their shop, which I think is the only option, so they can take a look. I have the best chances of working something out with the dealer if they are the ones doing the work. This sucks! Nothing like making porsche payments with no porsche.

As others have mentioned above, check on your states consumer protections laws. Since you have had the car a short amount of time you may be able to get a refund that the dealer doesn't want to offer.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Wear and tear item. In who's world?

#6 piston failure in seen too often and has nothing to do with piston ring failure. They know that. It is believed to be related to design issues in the motor which results in uneven cooling within the head. Nobody knows why some fail and others don't but frequent extreme cold starts and poor maintainance are suspected to play a part.

This is tough call. Once dealer tears down motor you are stuck there. If you have any thought of having a indy specialist do a rebuild nows the time to send the motor out. Save the labor cost. This is big bucks if insurance doesn't step up. I would try to get some kind of assurance from dealer that he will cut you a deal before you proceed there. They could pick up labor cost or something like that. Wouldn't hurt to call Porsche Customer Satisfaction Regional and try to get help there. This is a known failure mode in these engines. Do your homework on this.

Do check state lemon laws as was suggested.

Do you know which state this car spent it's former life in? Cold clime? Curious.

You might want to search for or start another thread asking for Help With Failed Engine. How To Proceed. Others have been through this and can give direction.

Between the warranty company and the dealer, I would think you should be able to get this handled amicably. It's a tough pill to accept that this is ordinary wear and tear and that a customer should just suck it up and pay for the cost of an engine rebuild after a few weeks of ownership. Just be calm and persistent. Consider legal action if you aren't treated well. Consult w a reputable lawyer who handles these sorts of things; there may be levers to pull re bad faith / punitive damages, etc. that are designed to prevent preclusive legal costs and punish those who don't honor their obligations. "Lemon laws" tend to apply to new cars, but there may be some protections in your state for purchasers of used cars.

update: So issue is finally resolved and I should have the car back in 7-10 days. Basically the dealership went after the warranty company with everything they had, and lost. Their lawyer told them they are not responsible as they sold the car with a warranty, so it is on the warranty company and customer. Thankfully the dealership did not stop at that, and decided that they would take the 30k job of buying a rebuilt block from porsche and installing it, knock off the labor to a 20k job, and then cover 15k of that making me ultimately responsible for 5k. The way I see it that means I pay 5k for an essentially new engine, rebuilt by porsche, and warrantied for two years by Porsche. I think this was the best possible outcome. thanks for all the advice.

It kind out worked out. I remember when you first posted and I cringed at mentioning bore scoring to a new owner. I would personally be thrilled with the outcome.

Sounds like the dealer went above and beyond.

Hope you're motoring soon enough!

I thought this would go on longer and end a lot worse.

Just thought I'd post an update after all these years. After having the rebuilt engine for several years I am still happily driving my c4s. for anyone in a similar situation reading this, sometimes things do work out!
