New guy here. Recently (late May) bought an '05 C2 w/ 59k miles. Had the car PPI'd by an indy and it came out with flying colors. Went to another indy a couple weeks ago for a second opinion and to get a price quote on an IMS/clutch job. He agreed that the car was really well taken care of. Purchase price was $33k. Car is low optioned and beautiful in its simplicity and rawness. Purchased from a Suby dealer who said the prior owner traded it in on a WRX (but who knows). Came with a Fabspeed exhaust and cold air kit.
Just ordered a refinished steering wheel from DCSW!
Trying to decide if I should upgrade the wheels or leave them stock.
Will do IMS and clutch in the fall.
No plans other than that.

So I ask 997 owners, why would the IMS be needed, I thought this was more of an 996 issue? I even looked at the IMS poll and it seems like a low number among the 997 group?

Most '05s and some '06 997.1s had the small, single-row bearing which many pointed fingers to as the culprit of the IMS fracas between Porsche and a group of disgruntled owners. No real way to tell unless a visual inspection is performed.
IMS can be a problem, but as some have speculated, bore scoring seems to be a more pressing issue.

I've read up on the bore scoring, even read a post on a 996.2 engine that had it. So the 997 should be checked out for the bore scoring, but there is no way of knowing how a owner treated their 997, is there?

As far as buying from dealers... all their cars are one-owner cream puffs that were either driven by grandma or by a guy who traded up to a GT3. Some of those stories are true but some might not be.

My advice when buying private party is you are buying the seller almost as much as the car. Chat him/her up about as much stuff as possible about the car in many different ways (I have worked in auditing and sales, and know how to get people to talk). I wont waste 10 sellers time but once I find a car I think will work I'll chat the seller up. If things add up, great, but if there is too much weirdness going on, don't buy the car. There is always a bit of gamble buying a used car out of warranty but between getting to know the seller and a ppi, you can eliminate much of the worry.

A few questions will get the true information.
I called a guy on a 997.
He was jabbering like a chimpanzee .
He couldn't answer any questions at all,
just misdirection.
After a minute of counteractions, I said thanks for your time and hung up.

Prices are aggressive but those are early 05' and/or high mileage cars.
For 30k, I would look at the following:
- Porsche 996 C4S (lots of them for low 30s). Most are fully optioned and have the wide body turbo look
- Porsche 997 CS 06. 05 are more prone to IMS issues then later ones with the bigger bearing, so you would need to purchase a retrofit.
Good luck.
