Second Key Coding Tips
When I purchased the car six months ago it only came with one key. I now have a second key "head" and uncut key blade. Planning to take to dealer next week to get the key cut and programmed.
Any tips or things I should make sure of when the key is coded?
Thanks!

They will have to code the transponder to your car so make sure your new key starts the car, that the cut blade will look/unlock door and glove compartment, and that the remote buttons both function.

Thanks. Great suggestions.
Is there also something about designating key #1 vs. #2?
Can they have separate settings and if so what can be programmed to be unique?

Yep - key 1 and key 2. IIRC, if you have memory seats, the seat position and mirror positions can be tied to the key plus some of the individual memory options if you have Sport Chrono.

The dealer was able to program my key to my car, but they sent me packing to get the key cut. Four locksmiths later, a guy reluctantly agreed to cut it. It works, but is a bit finicky. Good luck, I hope you don't get the runaround.

Call around - Any quality locksmith can cut the key - I used Cothran's in Austin.

When I purchased my 997 used, it came with a second key.
The key opens the door manually, but the remote doesnt work. Also, if I go to try to start the car with it, it triggers the alarm.
Question... can I code the key with Durametric Pro, or do I have to go to the dealer to get it coded to the car?

Halo, you just need to re-sync the key with the car. Happened to me a few weeks back. Search my prior posts and you should find the procedure. I would do it, but I'm out of town for a month and reading the forum from my iphone

From a previous post this I what I did or think I did. I would install a new battery to ensure you have a good battery before you do the re-sync.
Lock the doors from the outside by using the key in the door lock.
Unlock the drivers side door using the key in the door lock.
Within about 10 seconds or so, open the door and insert the key into the ignition. DON'T START THE CAR!!
With the key still in the ignition, push the unlock button on the key.
Voila, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the tip, Jason and jh. I have tried the procedure several times, with no success. I even swapped batteries to make sure that wasnt an issue.
That being said, Ill give it another try with Jason's detailed instructions.
THANKS !!!!

All done...key cut and programmed! First time to the dealer with my new to me 997
Service was quick.... Only hiccup was the cost. When I called was quoted $20 to cut the key and $71 to program (I provided the key blank and key "head"). Got to the counter to pay and was presented with $149 bill. So back to the service advisor who adjusted it back down.
Feel much better having a spare.
