Default Need help with screeching sound on start-up

Please view the enclosed video.

A couple of observations on the screeching sound:

If the car is not driven for a week's time upon start up after the week it will not make the screeching sound.

But if the car is driven and then sits for a couple hours or a day it will make the screeching sound upon start up.

If the car is driven around town and started in 10 or 15 minute intervals it never makes the sound.

I suspect this is the bendix moving in and out, but I really don't know. I appreciate your comments, kind thank yous.

Wow, your car turns over slow.

Mileage? Year? Is all maintenance up to date? How old is the serpentine belt?

It's sounds more like starter/flywheel grinding to me.

Original water pump?

I don't think it's plugs/wires/or coil pack related, but you're up to date on this stuff too?

First thing. Get some belt dressing. And quieten up the belt.
Sound like a dry bearing on the belt tensioner to me.

Could be a failed AOS diaphragm. They make a sound similar to this.

Hard to tell, but does it at all seem like the starter is getting stuck and grinding on the flywheel?.. (As suggested above). Might be able to cruise around our tech articles and see if anything might be relevant. Good luck.

Sounds like a starter hanging up FWIW.

Yeah I had this on my 06... I had a start motor that would stay engaged too long causing a similar noise. Easy to replace.

I've had a similar noise - from inside it sounded more like a short grinding noise. Nagged my dealer for 2 years about it on and off until I was able to finally get a tech to sit in the car and I could replay the sound I'd recorded and demonstrate. The dealer, in looking at it, indicated my sound (which may be a different sound source than yours) was present on many of the cars on the lot (997.2's).

They indicated they thought it was the fuel pre-pump in the tank up front feeding fuel to the engine in the back.

In my car, the sound was like a non-disengaging starter motor -but very clearly came from the FRONT end of the car - so the starter could not be the issue.

Perhaps pelican parts couldd make a subscription-paid video DIY section showing how to do all these jobs on 997.1 and .2

give me walkthroughs on video of spark plugs and clutches and etc. etc. etc. and I will give you my money AND my views on your site

Based on when the noise appears I'd have to guess the starter overrun clutch is dragging.

You have over 100K miles on the car. That's a bit early for the overrun clutch to go but they can fail at any time. The one in my Boxster makes a noise but the Boxster engine has over 290K miles. Tech says when the problem gets bad enough to fix the starter can be sent out to be rebuilt which saves a bundle of money.

Funny you say that! Video is something we are actually working on. It's a slow process, but we are hoping to get a bit more with the times and start doing more video DIY content and reviews!

Definitely stater motor - mine was making an identical screech sound and turned engine over a bit lazily as well - i replaced the starter motor last month and screech has gone and i love how it spins the engine over smartly now! - feels like a new car!

get your starter motor changed - its a diy if your handy!
