It is time for a change. I think I am going to sell the 964 I've happily owned for the past 5 years and get a 997S. I've been casually looking and finally went for a test drive last night in a '06 997S and that pretty much sealed the deal. I liked the added power and the handling felt great.

One thing I really liked was the Adaptive Sport Seats the car had. The normal sport seats are like the ones in my 964 and very tapered towards the top. The problem I'm finding is that there are very few cars available where this was an option.

I do feel kind of foolish selling an appreciating asset for a depreciating one but I you only go around once and I want a new experience. I've also noticed over the last few years that the enthusiasts are beginning to acquire 997's and starting to DIY on them. A large part of what I love about my 964 has been doing my own work on the car and learning about all the systems in it. The community on that page is one of the best I've found on any site anywhere.

Cars are made to be driven! If you keep looking at your car as an investment, you will become more and more afraid of putting any miles on it, and it will just sit in the garage, looking pretty.

I think you are making a great choice. Cash out on the 964 now, take the profit that you made on the car and put it towards a nice 997s.

Then, drive the HELL out of that thing!

And if you want an investment, put some money in to stocks, and get the best of both worlds.

BTW, if you can find a 997.1 with a Jake Raby engine in it for sale (I know, they are pretty rare) you will have an asset that depreciates very little, with little chance of anything ever going wrong with the engine. Maybe give him a call, and see if he has anything.

 

Keep the 964 and get the 997. Better yet, sell the 964, get an earlier (torsion bar suspension) 911 and the 997.

 

Saw your FS ad. Based on your asking price for the color combo and mileage you might be a 964 owner for some time

 

I may be foolish as well but I wouldn't trade my 997 for your appreciating asset. Good luck with your search.

But seriously, what is wrong with his color combo? I checked it out after your comment, expecting it to be horrid. It is not my top choice, but looks pretty clean. And I have definitely seen worse.

 

This is correct, I agree. Price is in line and I'm sure it will go for 90% or better of asking.

This said, I think the OP is wrong to think a well bought and well maintained 997.1 is a depreciating asset.

They're totally different machines. The mechanical engagement of the 964 is not found in the 997 and the modern power, feel and ownership experience of the 997 is not found in a 964. It's tempting to swap one for the other, but either way, you'll miss the hell out of the one you give up!

 

I dont think I could let a 964 go for a 06 carrera...

997 series is a nice series, but the 964 is so much more fun!

 

For all the advantages of the "modern" Porsches...the technology is like a quicksand that traps you. Before you make the deal figure out if you can live with a car that only offers a can of glue and air instead of a real spare tire. Then look at how you open the frunk and engine bay...and then read how to do it when the battery is dead. And then check what happens to the car if it isn't used for 4 days and how long it can sit in the garage before the battery is dead. All this technology almost makes a 1984 Maserati Biturbo look like a practical car. Keep the 964 and for one half to a third of the price get 95% of a 997 by adding a 996 to your garage. And the 996 actually has a real spare tire.

 

Why do you want a spare tire so badly? Just wondering.

Do you not have roadside assistance? If I get a flat that the bottle doesnt fix it, then I just call CAA (that is in Canada. I guess it is AAA in the US).

And with the way people drive now-a-days (in Toronto, Canada, anyway, eh), there is no way I am changing the wheel on the side of the road with a crapy jack. I don't know what Porsche used to give, but I have had the old scissor jacks bend and collapse on me.

Then there is the whole safety issue. In Toronto, there are very few places on public roads where I would feel safe changing a wheel. There have been many people seriously injured or killed doing their own roadside repairs. Even tow truck drivers have been killed on the side of the road hooking up a car.

Are you honestly telling me that when you get a flat, you dont call roadside assistance?

I dont want to carry around a 50 pound wheel in a small car for the once a decade time that I get a flat and can actually change it myself. I pay $120 a year to CAA, and I'm covered for a tow up to 200km. That is if the green glue doesnt save the day.

EDIT: actually, I always have them send a flatbed, because all my cars are AWD. So, not technically a tow.

 

Made the switch from my 92 C2 when I also sat in my soon to be 06S
With the adaptive Seats. My back was bothering me in the C2 and one drive in the 06S and I was sold.
If possible hold out for a 997.2 for better electronics no IMS, RMS problems.

 

My 996 C4S had an inflatable spare tire that could only be used on the front of the car. It didn't even have a can of Fix A Flat in case a rear tire was punctured. I never used the inflatable spare tire and it took up too much space in the frunk.

I think your 964 looks great. If it were mine, I'd keep it and sell one of the Mercs to fund the 997. But, then again, the grass is always greener isn't it.
