Default Another 991 vs 997 comparison

I wasn't planning to "upgrade" this soon but a car that ticked all my boxes came available less than 100 miles away, and the small Pcar dealer wanted my 997.2S cab more than I did! I have owned it nearly 3 weeks and thought I'd share some differences I have found and post a pic too. These are in no special order. 1)The wind stopper (cab) is nicer in operation as you know it is electrically operated and folds away when not needed. It also is less effective! I think because of the longer wheel base, it is further behind you & the air swirl is a bit more noticeable on the 991 with the side windows up, including rears! 2)The cruise control stock is now on the lower left side, no other consequence. 3)No steering wheel lock what so ever. 4)Garage door or universal remote switches are located on the horizontal shelf and are harder to manipulate as compared to 997. 5)Fuel cap is not a click type, just one snap for on/off. 6)The gear shift height (Pdk or manual) is slightly higher than 997; not as "perfect" imo. 7)Seat heater and seat ventilation switches for passenger seat located directly below left drink holder -not good! 8)Black gauge faces vs white on S models; I prefer 997S white. 9)Huge airbag warning decals on the sunvises! 10)No rear bumper guards. 11)Coasting (PDK) and auto start/stop is very seamless but hardly ever useful for around town (limitations). 11)Front track is 2" wider than 997 (AWD models) making the front nearly as wide as rear. 12)The Porsche umbrella holder in the right door sill inside edge is not deep enough to contain the umbrella, protrudes up 1.5"s and can be kicked out of the car easily. 13)The front tires "scrub" when cold at slow speeds when turning -very strange feeling and sound.
Most of these are nebulous but thought some of you would appreciate the details. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy the 991 C4s. The PDK imo is much improved, very noticeable in "hill hold" particularly when reversing up a hill. The Sport button leaves the PASM off, have to select it on separately unless Sport Plus is used. Ride comfort is also very nice. I have enjoyed all my 911s, this is by far my favorite.

Nice looking ride, long and sleek. Is it still a 911? I mean does it feel like a 911?

Absolutely! Feels very similar in most ways as my 997.2. Just a bit more "sophisticated" if I can use that word without pissing anyone off.

" smoother, less edgy, better standards" are some of the comparative words I have read. The question almost no one has neither asked nor answered is " Is it really better?

Thanks for the list of niggles. They are duly noted.

Very pretty indeed. Amazing they can make these cars ride so well on 20" wheels!

Pretty typical 991 owner report.

It may just be me but I can't tell the difference at slower speeds or frequent turning such as "in town" driving. Feels awesome just like every 911 before. My car does have the optional "power steering plus" too. On the highway, I think the 991 steering is a tiny bit numb. Not as much road feedback as my 997 cars. As a cab, it is quieter inside with the top up than the 997 though. And the symposer makes it sound better as you wind the engine up.

I returned to my car in a parking lot over the weekend and a black 991 cab was parked next to me. It was clear how much longer and lower the 991 was compared to my 997.2. The biggest difference was in the rear...the 991 has a much leaner slope compared to the fat a$$ on my car.

I should also mention that the famous oversteer of the 911 is much improved with the 991. That is, it has over steer but very much more controllable and predictable. I think the front track widening and the 245 front tires and no doubt the longer wheel base all contribute to this improvement.

There hasn't been snap oversteer in a 911 since the late '70s. Only an incompetent driver will succumb to 911 oversteering especially on rear multilink suspensions since the 993. The 991 did not 'improve' that. However, the 991 virtually erased the 911 signature pendulum dynamics (sans-oversteering) and made the car as neutral as any run-of-the-mill car. Where's the fun or improvement?
