Default Thought's on this 997 '05

Hey guys,

Ive been looking at 997s. I found this 2005 Cobalt Blue with black interior, exactly what i'm looking for. I was always told never to buy the first year of a new model car. Ive been doing research and the only thing I have heard about these cars are great things and the motors are bullet proof.

If you guys could give any insight/experiences that would be great!

Here's a link to the car:

The only issues I know of with the 2005 cars is the ims bearing. In some ways having the the smaller bearing found in the early 05 cars is good because at least you can have it replaced as a serviceable item. In the later 05 and on builds the bearing can't be removed without cracking the case.

The search is really the fun part of buying a 911... Enjoy it!

The 997 is a great car and that is a beautiful color combination. I love the enthusiasm, but I don't know if I would call the engine "bullet proof". Like any 10 year old car, it has the potential for some issues. There are some that are specific to Porsches and some that aren't (age, wear and tear, etc.). Do your homework on the car, get a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified Porsche mechanic, check the service records, etc.

Keep us posted if you decide to look at the car.

Whatever you do, don't take it to Pfaff Porsche for a pre-inspection. The car I bought had a clean bill of health from them and turned out to have several issues that I'm still going through (suspension loose, coolant leaks, airbag issues, door latch, etc). Basic maintenance/wear items to be sure, but they can still add up and need to be factored into the price of the car. They can easily add up to $ thousands if you don't do the work yourself.

I've got a 2005 Launch Edition 997S and it's given me 0 issues in over 5 years of ownership. Approaching 68,000 miles now, as long as they are well maintained they will last a lifetime. Porsches have the highest reliability rating of any sports car so I would say your assessment is correct, many 997's with well over 100,000 miles.

I agree - there are so many options that the search is the fun part. I started by looking for a 996. Then I considered a 997 Targa, a 996 Turbo, a 996/997 Cabriolet, a launch edition 997, and then I ended up with an 05 997 C2S. LOVE my car. But do pay attention to the IMS bearing issue with the 996's and some 997's. If you have questions about that, contact http://www.flat6innovations.com/

I have an early 2005 911 C2S, and it's been great. I paid to upgrade the IMS bearing, and in return, it's given me reliable pleasure for 3+ years.

I have an 05 that was purchased 60 days ago approx and immediately had the IMS corrected. Call a Porsche dealer with the VIN and they can tell you if that car is the earlier 997 like mine where the IMS should be retrofitted or later model where it less likely to be needed. The car looks very nice but I would say their price is high for the miles and year. Other than that, appears to be a loaded car. Check the history for service and do a Prepurchase Inspection before you finalize buying it.

I'm on my 2nd 2005, love the fact that when time comes to do the clutch then i can do the boogie man IMS for minimal cost. My first one had 35k with no issues, this one has 56k w no issues and haven't done IMS on neither of them
