i drain my oil into a 5 gallon paint can (plastic) which I cut down to fit under a 911 engine when slightly raised. I also marked it with a scribe every 2 quarts. Thus, I know exactly what comes out. I only put back what I took out.

The magnetic drain plugs usually will be clean--much of our engines are made of non-ferrous metals now. So, a lot of stuff is getting by.

I do the same thing with the calibrated drain tub. I fear the over fill on these flat engines.

It really comes down to looking closely at the oil and tearing the filter apart. Does it sparkle in the dark with a flash light? Yes? Then send it in for analysis. No? Hold the analysis for next time but store a quart from this change just in case you need a comparison. At least that's my take.

I put the magnetic drain plug in as a sense of habit and responsibility. Intellectually I don't expect it to do squat. But it makes me feel better.
