Default Carbon Fiber Exhaust Tips

Hi Guys, I have a 2011 997.2 Cab C4S, 39Kms, Macadian Brown, the exhaust tips are really bad, the service adviser suggested that I will have a hard time to clean them up, and may not be able to do much.

On my 993 I had them ceramic coated in the same color as the car and they were fine, on the 997 Im contemplating doing the same, or ordering these from Ebay, opinions required :

meh....the rivets detract from the look (IMO), and I really don't get CF for exhaust tips (again, just my opinion)

why don't you think you can clean the existing ones?

maybe powdercoat/paint the originals to black.

I don't think you will be able to see the rivet when secured to the car. Also...do whatch that ebay listing. You will be ordering from England. Do consider the time it will take and possible duty.
Cleaning you own tips? Service adviser? Neither of those tips are not self cleaning, a hose spray will not work. I cleaned my factory tips most hand washes. A little simple green, or mother's metal polish. No problem.

I recently had my tips powdercoated. Looks awesome. Way better than the previous old stained, brushed aluminum finish.

I had great results cleaning my original dual S tips with 0000 steel wool (aka quadruple aught or ultra-fine steel wool). You would think that would be overkill and would scratch things badly, but it will clean the stainless tips up very nicely. I only used when normal cleaning during a wash no longer sufficed and it worked great. Another thread discussed this a while back and there are others that do this.

Note that the carbon fiber tips will also get coated in soot the same way, but I'd be concerned about how to safely clean those since the epoxy probably doesn't like a lot of cleaners. I also doubt that they would weather the heat well. Have you every seen what happens to most exposed carbon fiber after just a couple of years? Most do not hold up well, even the stuff Porsche uses for the carbon fiber console.

Those are shipping from Taiwan, I'd be weary of quality.

You may want to ask Nigel the exact process that he just used to make Moby purdy again. See post #1500 in the following thread:

If you have the PSE tips with the black pipes and silver surround like I have (see post above), the silver part is actually painted and will clean up nicely with Krud Kutter cleaner and a toothbrush. Just don't use a solvent like Goof Off because that will rub the silver paint off! On my car, these didn't need painting. The pipes on the PSE exhaust are also painted and get a lot of abuse from road debris, so they end up in worse shape. I used a high temperature paint designed for use on engines and gas grills. Surface preparation is key. I cleaned and scrubbed everything with Krud Kutter, then sanded the paint before applying multiple layers of paint. I'm not seeing any signs of the paint degrading.

If you don't have PSE, then I don't think painting will work. The paint just won't adhere to a bare metal surface. I like the ones you found on eBay, but then I'm okay with small carbon fiber accents.

Post pictures of your dirty tips. Woah, that came across a bit lewd

I have the PSE on my 4S and had the outer silver sleeves ceramic powder coated in satin black. My car is meteor grey and it looks very nice, in my opinion.
