2006 Carrera S with 120k Miles - What do I need to know?
#33
So, just picked her up from the shop today after closing on it yesterday. They replaced coilpacks, spark plugs, serp belt, flushed brake fluid and front inner/out TRE...total bill $1k. Not terrible considering how much the dealer would've charged.
I went for a quick spin and I have to tell you that I was grinning from ear to ear! I used to have an Audi RS4 and I thought that was fast...but this is truly a sports car! I loved every minute!
My first mod: taking the sticky crap off of the radio buttons. Cost: $.17 in rubbing alcohol. I have Dension 500S BT on order and will install that next week.
A few questions:
- The PSE light is always on; when I press it, it will flash briefly but remain on. What do you think is the culprit?
- The lighted door sill on the passenger side is out; is that an easy fix?
- When I lock the car, it doesn't make an audible beep; is that a setting I can change?
Thanks again for all the words of encouragement...I really think I made the right call. I took my buddy for a quick spin and he agrees.
I'm going to get it washed tomorrow; I'll post pictures then.

And that's considered a 997 feature - no beep when you lock the car. Took me two years to get used to it. It should flash twice for locked. Once for unlocked.

Not the greatest pictures, but here she is. It's definitely a different experience driving this over my previous cars (Audi RS4, Cayenne Turbo, G37S). It really is a true sports car and the sound that comes from behind me when I'm on the gas is intoxicating!
I've had the coilpacks, spark plugs and serp belt replaced. My mechanic said that brakes and clutch are in good shape, so repairs I was budgeting for made this car an unbeatable deal!
The only upgrades I've done was installing a Dension iPhone/BT kit and clear side markers. I don't think there's much more I want to do to it.
There are only 2 things bugging me: My mechanic said the rear shocks were leaking oil and the sport exhaust light is always on. On the shocks, he said they ride just fine and to be wary of anything squeaking or feeling bouncy. For the sport exhaust, I'm not sure what to make of it or if it's worth fixing.

Congratulations on a great car! It is astonishing to read people's reaction against high mileage cars. Porsches in Europe are driven much more than in the US and they last longer. It is the garage queens who end up rotting.

Congratulations. Leaky shocks would be an issue over time. I would assume there is a finite amount of oil in there after all. The PSE could be an electrical issue. Try a small piece of black tape over the indicator at this point How electrics hold up long term is the question mark for these cars imo. Before putting any more money in I would suggest that you drive the car for a significant time and see how it does for you. You are going where no man has gone before. Keep the thread up. Good luck.

$100,000 discount!
Just have a few thousand set aside for surprises, but you will be amazed how well these things are built. I just turned 90,000 in my cabriolet today. They can also hold up cosmetically if just given a little TLC. From today:
