When I talked to the tech, I asked about a software update and it seemed to be news to him. Anyway, thanks for the replies. I try disconnecting the battery to see if it makes any difference.

Find a new tech. There is an update, which should solve your problem.
To the OP: You may want to check if you have the latest PDK software and you may also want to ask to have your PDK calibrated. Beyond that, the transmission may act clunky when is driven less than assertively, like... braking as a limo driver. When the PDK is driven assertively, i.e., like a sports car should be driven, I see no clunkiness.
Also, and contrary to common wisdom, when driving in slow city traffic, I have long preferred to drive SC Normal and PDK in M mode.
Another thing that irritates me:
In sport mode, rapidly slowing to 5mph, it drops into 1st., Still crawling, then upon accelerating, it stays in 1st beyond normal shift rpm and stays in 1st up around 5k rpms or until I shift with the paddle or shifter.

It's a sports car being driven in sport mode, the car is keeping you in the power band, take its hint and play with it.
I don't mind the quirkiness of the PDK at low speeds. Reminds me I'm not driving just any car.
Agree and if I drive really smooth w the throttle in sport mode it rewards me (and wife is happier) but if I'm solo or w a buddy and drive it aggressive, it rewards me then too
