Default Metal Shavings in Oil Filter

I changed the oil in my 997.2 C4S today. I decided to dissect the oil filter while the oil was draining and this is what I found. There are very small metal bits and shavings in the filter. How concerned should I be about this? I sent the oil to Blackstone, but I'm wondering if I need to get this checked out at the dealer. Its a CPO car...so not too scared about taking it in.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I don't think you have much to worry about there. Most likely debris from manufacturing that wasn't properly cleaned out. JR has mentioned this in the past. Fairly common to find this type of debris in an otherwise healthy engine. Oh, and the dealer doesn't care what you found while doing your own oil change and cutting open your filter.

Now get out there and drive it !

Thanks Phil. It didn't stop me from going for a "spirited" drive. But thought I'd still get others' opinions.

Thanks again! Have a nice weekend.

Is it metallic (attracted to magnet)?

This is good solid engine maintainance. Looks innocent enough I guess but I would hope next filter to be clear of metallic debris. Especially if motor has mileage on it. If it were me I wouldn't wait 10k miles to do the next oil change.

Thanks for the thoughts. The car only has 12,500 miles on it. I thought what I would do is pull the oil filter after 1000 miles or so and see what I find. I'll also wait and see what Blackstone says after their oil analysis.

I'll probably also change the oil in 3000 miles and send it to Blackstone again. I'll keep you all posted.

There are several magnetic sump plugs on market to make it easy to look for this kind of stuff. Obviously they don't help if there is a seal or guide failing. Some folks swear by them though, especially if you change to a cartridge filter system.

I don't think those tiny little particles is anything to worry about. All engines go thru normal wear and tear. I just had my oil change and I had the same tiny little particles.

I check my filter for metal as that is the sign for a potential IMS bearing failure warning.
Your filter looks fine.

Just received my Blackstone report. Nothing too alarming. It's all good!

Can you post your report? I'm trying to learn how to post and I will post mine.

Can someone post pictures of a dissected oil filter with bad metal shavings? I've seen a few posters now show their oil filters taken apart and people say "that's normal, don't worry". How about a photo of one to worry about for reference?

I would be concerned about the flecks if they are magnetic. Could be the surface of a bearing..
If it' non -magnetic then it's normal. I have the occasional small flecks of non-ferrous alloy which is fine. More so with the original oil change which hadn't been done for a while. Using 5w-50 M1.
