I think it's a terrible idea. Why would you want to sell your Carrera anyway, unless it was to replace it with a different Carrera...?

I was without a carrera for a few months last year. I sold my 996 in February 2013 and missed not having a 911 every day until I picked up a '10 carrera in September 2013. Every time I saw a 911 on the road it bothered me because I didn't have one to drive. If you enjoy it and you don't need the money and you're not planning on replacing it, why sell?

I sold my '97 993 and regretted it immediately. Then I sold my '08 Cayman S and regretted that. Now, I have an '11 C2S and am again happy... of course, you can see the trend..

1. To get another one
2. When you die

If I didn't have a bumper-to-bumper warranty on my '05 for another 3 years I would be seriously thinking about selling it, because even if the engine doesn't grenade from IMSB (I have the LN retrofit for 20K miles so far) the other potential repair costs over that time could potentially add up to nearly the difference between this car and a 997.2. And the thing eats tires and (premium) gas like a V8 truck. But given what I paid for the car (at the bottom of the economy in '09), the depreciation has been cheaper than leasing a Corolla, and certainly that depreciation is slowing with each year. When the warranty is up though, economics will outweigh sentimentality and I doubt I would hang onto it. The only thing that would change that would be if it was starting to go up in value like the 993, and I don't forsee that happening with the water pumpers.

And even when you die it's not a voluntary sale if no one wants to keep it. I think the point is you must keep it or get another one. I think it's actually a forum rule not specifically limited to the 997 forum.

Selling your 2oo5 will not pay the taxes of a new 991.
I think you need some therapy. Go crack a beer and wax your car.
Some bonding with your ride.
Sold my STi a few weeks ago, Suburban has a potential new owner.
Stable is thinning. My 997 is scared, and behaving wonderfully.

Super bad idea, I think you may have been in the sun to long fishing, to much sun can make you think about doing really bad things like selling your Porsche.

Thanks all for the great feedback. First I do not have a warranty, but I don't care much about that as I've built cars from ground up my entire life.
It is not about the money, just thought more about other places to spend.
But I think it is the sun, because I have been out a lot fishing, and have been thinking more about a larger boat and less about the car!
Just need to have higher speed limits, and more time to drive!

I just sold my boat in Florida. I went out on a couple of charters afterwards and thought how great it was not to have to clean the boat and maintain it when we arrived back to the dock. While at the dock, I met a guy who owned his own boat and mentioned how he had a tough time getting out to fish on his 50' Viking because he didn't know enough people who liked to fish. I've been out with him four times since, and enjoy piloting his boat because he seems unsure of his abilities (I've had 5 boats since 1979). We are also using my fishing tackle. So, it's like I have my own boat again, except I don't have to pay the bills, and he employs a cleaning service as well.
