Default Junk in my frunk

Hi all... I just purchased a base-model 997.1 and I've got a minor puzzle. I knew when I bought it that the CD changer and the nav unit were missing, which doesn't bother me too much as I didn't really want either of them. And sure enough, when I press the buttons on the PCM thing:

Attachment 1362112

Attachment 1362113

But when I look in the frunk where I expect to see these devices, I see this:

Attachment 1362114

What is it?

Any help appreciated. Hardly the greatest of the world's problems to solve but, well, you have to start somewhere.

it's funny my 997.1 is the same way. I wonder why the CD changer "goes missing"

The dealer I got the car from said they got the car that way. Do they come from the factory that way? Annoying that the first screen on pcm is always (CD changer not available) and I have to click out of that before taking off

Don't know what that thing is. The CD changer was an option on these cars, as was the navigation. If your car had those options, both would be in there in addition to that thing. One accepts the CD carousel through a door, and the other accepts the nav DVD through a slot. My car has both.

Ah - so if the car wasn't optioned with CD player and nav, the buttons are still on the PCM? I was kind of assuming they wouldn't be there.

If you were asking what the black box in there is, I believe it's a carbon canister used for the fuel recirc system.

I am not sure what do you mean about them missing? Like removed? or wasn't optioned? If you car didn't come with PCM, it would look different. I am not aware of any PCM with large screen that didn't have Nav with it.

If you have Nav, there's a big box in the trunk which has the navigation DVD in it, and for CD changer, there's another box to take the CDs in.

What I suspect is that the PCM was added later but the Nav unit in the trunk wasn't (which is more complicated, expensive).

I think they must not have been options. I was kind of assuming that if the buttons were on the PCM, they were originally optioned, but it seems like that's probably wrong. Maybe this isn't quite the mystery I built it up to be (and even then it wasn't much of one!).

Nav and the PCM came together, you couldn't order it separately... but CD changer could have been added to either PCM 2.1 and the regular stereo, so yes the button for it would be there.

PCM came with Nav, but CD changer could or could not have been added. I don't have it, but the button is there.

Ah OK. So I imagine mine came without the CD, but the nav has vanished somewhere.

I have a 2006 C4 that came with PCM and was optioned with a CD changer. It didn't come with NAV or TEL but it still has the large screen and buttons.

There was a thread a few days ago with a link to the build sheets. Put in your VIN and see if your 997 originally came with any of the options.

No, I think it came without Nav, PCM, or CD Changer, but PCM was added by someone later, but not the Nav unit in the frunk, or if that was added they removed it afterwards.

This is the NAV unit in the frunk, if you don't have it, then you never had NAV. Also, see the CD changer.

My '07 came with the PCM w/ AM/FM/MP3 capable CD player, 280 watts & 9 speakers was standard for the automobile. I believe all 997.1 cars were so equipped . Navigation for PCM was a $ 2,070 option, 6 disk CD changer was $ 650 , Bose was $ 1,390. Telephone was also available as an option but don't know what that option cost.

Mine (2006 C2) is identical to the OP's--PCM with all the buttons, no Nav and no CD changer.

PCM was standard, Nav and CD changer (and, I think, Bluetooth) were separate options, PCM had the buttons for everything even if those options weren't ordered. Confused me, too, when I originally thought I was buying a car that included those features... well, less to break in the long run

This from Porsche's 997.1 introductory press release:

The interior of the 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera and 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S has been completely redesigned with new steering wheels, seats, gauge cluster, improved climate control, standard Porsche Communication Management (with available DVD navigation system), updated audio, upgraded anti-theft system, six standard airbags and the new Sport Chrono Package Plus option.
